{"id":4143,"date":"2016-03-12T08:49:12","date_gmt":"2016-03-12T14:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4143"},"modified":"2023-02-23T16:01:15","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T22:01:15","slug":"1-thessalonians-11-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4143","title":{"rendered":"1 Thessalonians 1:1-3"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text 1Thess-1-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1\u00a0<\/span>Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-29563\" class=\"text 1Thess-1-2\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span class=\"text 1Thess-1-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29564\" class=\"text 1Thess-1-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Paul (v.1) \u2014 see my notes <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=235\">here<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=236\">here<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=238\">here<\/a><\/span> \u2014 The letters to the Thessalonians are the only letters in which Paul uses his name only with no descriptive title.<\/h3>\n<h3>Silvanus (v.1) = Silas, who traveled with Paul on his second missionary journey. A Hellenistic Jew and a Roman citizen.<\/h3>\n<h3>Timothy (v.1) \u2014 see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3413\">introduction to 1 Timothy<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>church (v.1) = Lit. &#8220;a company called out&#8221; \u2014 the Greek word is used in Scripture to refer to the Israelites (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1422\">Acts 7:38<\/a><\/span>); an unruly mob (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1882\">Acts 19:32<\/a><\/span>); an assembly of governing citizens (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1882\">Acts 19:39<\/a><\/span>); all those saved in the current dispensation into the Body of Christ (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3687\">Ephesians 1:22-23<\/a><\/span>); all those saved in the prophetic kingdom (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3120\">Matthew 16:18<\/a><\/span>); or a local assembly of believers, as here<\/h3>\n<h3>Thessalonians (v.1) \u2014 see the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4135\">introduction<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>in (v.1) = expresses intimacy of union<\/h3>\n<h3>Lord (v.1, 2x) = master, owner \u2014 a title of respect \u2014 Jesus Christ used the title to describe Himself (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=814\">John 13:13<\/a><\/span>).<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">grace to you and peace (v.1) \u2014 the latter was the usual greeting among the Jews (cp.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2830\">Matthew 10:12-13<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">; Luke 10:5), as <em>chairete<\/em> &#8211; &#8220;rejoice!&#8221; was among Greeks (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1587\">Acts 15:23<\/a><\/span>). This latter, however, the apostle Paul does not use, but for it substitutes <em>charis<\/em> = grace. \u2014 Vine, page 19.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>always (v.2) = on all occasions<\/h3>\n<h3><span id=\"en-NKJV-29564\" class=\"text 1Thess-1-3\">without ceasing<\/span> (v.3) \u2014 the same word is used in secular writings to describe an incessant cough, so Paul isn&#8217;t talking about uninterrupted prayer but constantly recurring prayer.<\/h3>\n<h3>Verse three includes faith, hope and love (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2434\">1 Corinthians 13:13<\/a><\/span>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4265\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 5:8<\/span><\/a>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2040\">Colossians 1:4-5<\/a><\/span>).<\/h3>\n<h3>work of faith (v.3) \u2014\u00a0<span id=\"en-NKJV-26286\" class=\"text John-6-28\"> Paul\u00a0 describes this in 1 Thessalonians 1:9: <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8230; <\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29570\" class=\"text 1Thess-1-9\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">you turned to God from idols &#8230;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span> \u2014\u00a0 The same idea is found in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=658\">John 6:28-29<\/a><\/span>: <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Then they said to Him, \u201cWhat shall we do, that we may work the works of God?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-26287\" class=\"text John-6-29\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Jesus answered and said to them, <\/span><\/em><span class=\"woj\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cThis is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent&#8221;.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>labor of love (v.3) \u2014 Paul also describes this in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4157\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 1:9<\/span><\/a>: <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8230; <span id=\"en-NKJV-29570\" class=\"text 1Thess-1-9\">to serve the living and true God<\/span><\/span><\/em>.
