1\u00a0<\/span>Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

2\u00a0<\/sup>We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

3\u00a0<\/sup>remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

Paul (v.1) \u2014 see my notes here<\/a><\/span>, here<\/a><\/span> and here<\/a><\/span> \u2014 The letters to the Thessalonians are the only letters in which Paul uses his name only with no descriptive title.<\/h3>\n

Silvanus (v.1) = Silas, who traveled with Paul on his second missionary journey. A Hellenistic Jew and a Roman citizen.<\/h3>\n

Timothy (v.1) \u2014 see introduction to 1 Timothy<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n

church (v.1) = Lit. “a company called out” \u2014 the Greek word is used in Scripture to refer to the Israelites (Acts 7:38<\/a><\/span>); an unruly mob (Acts 19:32<\/a><\/span>); an assembly of governing citizens (Acts 19:39<\/a><\/span>); all those saved in the current dispensation into the Body of Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23<\/a><\/span>); all those saved in the prophetic kingdom (Matthew 16:18<\/a><\/span>); or a local assembly of believers, as here<\/h3>\n

Thessalonians (v.1) \u2014 see the introduction<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n

in (v.1) = expresses intimacy of union<\/h3>\n

Lord (v.1, 2x) = master, owner \u2014 a title of respect \u2014 Jesus Christ used the title to describe Himself (John 13:13<\/a><\/span>).<\/h3>\n

grace to you and peace (v.1) \u2014 the latter was the usual greeting among the Jews (cp.<\/span> Matthew 10:12-13<\/a><\/span>; Luke 10:5), as chairete<\/em> – “rejoice!” was among Greeks (Acts 15:23<\/a><\/span>). This latter, however, the apostle Paul does not use, but for it substitutes charis<\/em> = grace. \u2014 Vine, page 19.<\/span><\/h3>\n

always (v.2) = on all occasions<\/h3>\n

without ceasing<\/span> (v.3) \u2014 the same word is used in secular writings to describe an incessant cough, so Paul isn’t talking about uninterrupted prayer but constantly recurring prayer.<\/h3>\n

Verse three includes faith, hope and love (1 Corinthians 13:13<\/a><\/span>; 1 Thessalonians 5:8<\/span><\/a>; Colossians 1:4-5<\/a><\/span>).<\/h3>\n

work of faith (v.3) \u2014\u00a0 Paul\u00a0 describes this in 1 Thessalonians 1:9: … <\/span><\/em>you turned to God from idols …<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span> \u2014\u00a0 The same idea is found in John 6:28-29<\/a><\/span>: Then they said to Him, \u201cWhat shall we do, that we may work the works of God?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span> Jesus answered and said to them, <\/span><\/em>\u201cThis is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent”.<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

labor of love (v.3) \u2014 Paul also describes this in 1 Thessalonians 1:9<\/span><\/a>: … to serve the living and true God<\/span><\/span><\/em>. Labor, here, is “toil resulting in weariness”<\/h3>\n

patience of hope (v.3) = patient endurance (under trial) while waiting for Christ’s return \u2014 That the Thessalonians had been doing this can be see in 1 Thessalonians 1:6<\/span><\/a>; 2:14<\/span><\/a> \u2014 In 1 Thessalonians 1:10<\/span><\/a>, the patience of hope is described as\u00a0 … to wait for His Son from heaven<\/span> …<\/span><\/em> \u2014 Hope, here and most places where Paul uses the term, refers to faith in the future, confidence that God will do what He promises.<\/h3>\n
