class=\"text Ps-50-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGather My saints together to Me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14675\" class=\"text Ps-50-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>Let the heavens declare His righteousness,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> For God Himself is Judge. <span class=\"selah\">Selah<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14676\" class=\"text Ps-50-7\" style=\"color: style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Will I eat the flesh of bulls,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Or drink the blood of goats?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14683\" class=\"text Ps-50-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>Offer to God thanksgiving,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And pay your vows to the Most High.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14684\" class=\"text Ps-50-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>Call upon Me in the day of trouble;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14685\" class=\"text Ps-50-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>But to the wicked God says:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> \u201cWhat right have you to declare My statutes,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Or take My covenant in your mouth,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14686\" class=\"text Ps-50-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Seeing you hate instruction<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And cast My words behind you?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14687\" class=\"text Ps-50-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>When you saw a thief, you consented with him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And have been a partaker with adulterers.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14688\" class=\"text Ps-50-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>You give your mouth to evil,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And your tongue frames deceit.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14689\" class=\"text Ps-50-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>You sit and speak against your brother;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> You slander your own mother\u2019s son.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14690\" class=\"text Ps-50-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>These things you have done, and I kept silent;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> You thought that I was altogether like you;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> But I will rebuke you,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And set them in order before your eyes.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14691\" class=\"text Ps-50-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cNow consider this, you who forget God,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Lest I tear you in pieces,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And there be none to deliver:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14692\" class=\"text Ps-50-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>Whoever offers praise glorifies Me;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And to him who orders his conduct aright<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-50-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I will show the salvation of God.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Asaph (intro) \u2014 The first of three heads of the three families of Levitical singers in the time of David (see 1 Chronicles 25; 16:7). He is also elsewhere described as a &#8220;seer&#8221; (2 Chronicles 29:30), one &#8220;who prophesied&#8221; (1 Chronicles 25:1-2), and &#8220;the prophet&#8221; (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2933\">Matthew 13:35<\/a><\/span>) \u2014 descriptions which are clearly borne out in the present psalm, not only by virtue of its inclusion in Scripture, but also his expressing the majority of the psalm (from v.5 onwards) as the first-person utterance of God. Aside from this psalm there are eleven others attributed to Asaph, all of which are found at the beginning of the &#8220;third book&#8221; of Psalms (i.e., Psalms 73-83). \u2014 Wechsler, page 141.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span class=\"chapter-2\"><span class=\"text Ps-50-1\">the Mighty One, God the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span><\/span><\/span> (v.1) = El Elohim Yahweh<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">our God shall come (v.3) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7342\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 96:13<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14673\" class=\"text Ps-50-4\">He shall call to the heavens from above<\/span> (v.4) \u2014 The word &#8220;from&#8221; should be omitted. It should just read &#8220;heavens above.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Ps-50-5\">Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice<\/span> (v.5) \u2014 Exodus 24:7-8: <em><span id=\"en-NKJV-2185\" class=\"text Exod-24-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, \u201cAll that the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> has said we will do, and be obedient.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-NKJV-2186\" class=\"text Exod-24-8\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, \u201cThis is the blood of the covenant which the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> has made with you according to all these words.\u201d<\/span><\/em> See also <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1778\">Hebrews 9:19-22<\/a><\/span>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14675\" class=\"text Ps-50-6\">the heavens declare His righteousness<\/span> (v.6) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7362\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 97:6<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Towards His people \u2014 righteous Israelites \u2014 God&#8217;s judicial &#8220;fire&#8221; (which frequently attends the manifestations of God, either in visions or material-historical reality, especially in connection with His giving of the Law to Israel) is applied in admonishment, or chastisement, and ultimately acquittal. The basis for this chastisement (as opposed to judgment) is the relationship that exists between God and His people, as borne out by His description of them as &#8220;My people&#8221; and Himself as &#8220;your God&#8221; (v.7) \u2014 which descriptions clearly recall and so tie together both his fourth, culminating promise given at the outset of His first historical act of redeeming His people (the Exodus) and His declaration of the promise&#8217;s fulfillment at His final historical act of redeeming His people when they are brought in imperishable purity into their home of the New Creation. \u2014 Wechsler, page 142.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">His accusation (v.8) is not that they have been guilty of negligence in the ritual of sacrifices; that duty has been regularly performed. His charge (vs. 9-13) concerns their motives. They have offered their beasts to Him as though He had immediate need of them and must therefore feel grateful for their generosity. God declares the absurdity of such a view of worship; all mans&#8217; possessions, all nature in fact, belong to Him.\u00a0 \u2014 Guthrie, page 483.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14681\" class=\"text Ps-50-12\">If I were hungry, I would not tell you<\/span> (v.12) \u2014 None of my commentaries comment on this. I think the sense must be that <em>if<\/em> God were hungry (hypothetically), He wouldn&#8217;t tell them because there would be no need \u2014 everything He would need is already His.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Ps-50-12\">the world <i>is<\/i> Mine<\/span> (v.12) \u2014 Exodus 19:5; Deuteronomy 10:14; Job 41:11; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3896\">Psalm 24:1<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2380\">1 Corinthians 10:26<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Ps-50-17\">cast My words behind you<\/span> (v.17) \u2014 Nehemiah 9:26<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Ps-50-21\">set <i>them<\/i> in order before your eyes<\/span> (v.21) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7131\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 90:8<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">God&#8217;s patience they regard as weakness (v.21), and His forbearance, which would give them opportunity to repent, is construed as indifference or even acquiescence. Their casual assumption that God must be as lawless, fraudulent and faithless as themselves will be utterly demolished. Their every deed will be brought before them and its consequences upon their own selves will be shown. \u2014 Guthrie, page 483.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">consider this (v.22) \u2014 offering a last chance to make things right?<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Immediately prior to the [second coming] of the Messiah, Israel will be reduced to the lowest possible depth of misery and well-nigh extinction as a nation.
