A Song for Alamoth.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-46-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>God <i>is<\/i> our refuge and strength,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> A very present help in trouble.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14617\" class=\"text Ps-46-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore we will not fear,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Even though the earth be removed,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14618\" class=\"text Ps-46-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup><i>Though<\/i> its waters roar <i>and<\/i> be troubled,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <i>Though<\/i> the mountains shake with its swelling. <span class=\"selah\">Selah<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14619\" class=\"text Ps-46-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup><i>There is<\/i> a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The holy <i>place<\/i> of the tabernacle of the Most High.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14620\" class=\"text Ps-46-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>God <i>is<\/i> in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14621\" class=\"text Ps-46-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He uttered His voice, the earth melted.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14622\" class=\"text Ps-46-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> of hosts <i>is<\/i> with us;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The God of Jacob <i>is<\/i> our refuge. <span class=\"selah\">Selah<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14623\" class=\"text Ps-46-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Come, behold the works of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Who has made desolations in the earth.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14624\" class=\"text Ps-46-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He burns the chariot in the fire.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14625\" class=\"text Ps-46-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Be still, and know that I <i>am<\/i> God;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I will be exalted among the nations,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I will be exalted in the earth!<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14626\" class=\"text Ps-46-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> of hosts <i>is<\/i> with us;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Ps-46-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The God of Jacob <i>is<\/i> our refuge. <span class=\"selah\">Selah<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">Alamoth (intro) = &#8220;with virgins&#8221; or &#8220;maidens&#8217; voices&#8221; \u2014 This could also refer to the name of the melody.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span class=\"chapter-2\"><span class=\"text Ps-46-1\">refuge and strength<\/span><\/span> (v.1) \u2014 God is a source of refuge (i.e., defense) and strength (i.e., offense) for His people, enabling them to hold their ground both physically, against enemy forces that would seek to push them off the Promised Land, as well as spiritually, against the accusations of the enemy that their sins have disqualified them to be God&#8217;s &#8220;special treasure.&#8221; The depth of\u00a0 God&#8217;s solicitude is stressed by the further description of Him as being a very present (i.e., always available) help (a variant form of the same word applied to Eve \u2014 often translated &#8220;helpmate&#8221; \u2014 in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4506\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 2:18 and 20<\/span><\/a>) in trouble. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 131-132<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The river (v.4) whose divisions (or &#8220;streams&#8221;) make glad &#8230; the holy dwelling places (i.e., the Temple compound and all its compartments, as in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4018\">Psalm 43:3<\/a><\/span>) of the Most High parallels both the phraseology and specific concepts surrounding (1) the Garden of Eden, from which a river flowed out and was divided, and where God and man were meant for glad communion in each others&#8217; presence (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4496\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 2:10<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4521\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3:8<\/span><\/a>); (2) the reestablishment of God&#8217;s (i.e., Jesus&#8217;) presence in the Holy Place, where He will dwell among the sons of Israel and at which time a river will open up just\u00a0 below the altar and bring the gladness of life and healing to all along its course (Ezekiel 47:1-12); and (3) the renewal of Creation, all of which will become God&#8217;s holy &#8220;tabernacle,&#8221; where man will at last commune in the unfettered presence of God \u2014 from whose throne, secured forever on Mount Moriah in the New Jerusalem, will flow a river of life and healing for all (see Revelation 21:3, 22; 22:1-2). \u2014 Wechsler, page 132-133.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14624\" class=\"text Ps-46-9\">makes wars cease<\/span> (v.9) \u2014 Isaiah 2:4<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">be still (v.10) = cease striving, relax<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">know (v.10) = experiential knowledge, which requires a relationship with God<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">The interpretation that makes the most sense to me is that this psalm looks forward to the Tribulation when God will defeat the nations and His faithful remnant will be saved and enter His rest. Even if it was written in reference to some historical event, I think there can be no doubt it will be sung and have its greatest application in the future.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the Chief Musician.
