style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And let the angel of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> pursue them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14418\" class=\"text Ps-35-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>For without cause they have hidden their net for me in a pit,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Which they have dug without cause for my life.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14419\" class=\"text Ps-35-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Let destruction come upon him unexpectedly,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And let his net that he has hidden catch himself;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Into that very destruction let class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>All my bones shall say,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> \u201c<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, who is like You,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Yes, the poor and the needy from him who plunders him?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14422\" class=\"text Ps-35-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>Fierce witnesses rise up;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> They ask me things that I do not know.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14423\" class=\"text Ps-35-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>They reward me evil for good,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> To the sorrow of my soul.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14424\" class=\"text Ps-35-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>But as for me, when they were sick,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> My clothing was sackcloth;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I humbled myself with fasting;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And my prayer would return to my own heart.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14425\" class=\"text Ps-35-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>I paced about as though he were my friend or brother;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14426\" class=\"text Ps-35-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>But in my adversity they rejoiced<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And gathered together;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Attackers gathered against me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And I did not know it;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> They teeth.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14428\" class=\"text Ps-35-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Lord, how long will You look on?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Rescue me from their destructions,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> My precious life from the lions.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14429\" class=\"text Ps-35-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>I will give You thanks in the great assembly;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I will praise You among many people.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14430\" class=\"text Ps-35-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14431\" class=\"text Ps-35-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>For they do not speak peace,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> But they devise deceitful matters<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Against the quiet ones in the land.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14432\" class=\"text Ps-35-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>They also opened their mouth wide against me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And said, \u201cAha, aha!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Our eyes have seen it.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14433\" class=\"text Ps-35-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>This You have seen, O <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Do not keep silence.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> O Lord, do not be far from me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14434\" class=\"text Ps-35-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>Stir up Yourself, and awake to my according to Your righteousness;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-24\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And let them not rejoice over me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14436\" class=\"text Ps-35-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>Let them not say in their hearts, \u201cAh, so we would have it!\u201d<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Let them not say, \u201cWe have swallowed him up.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14437\" class=\"text Ps-35-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Who rejoice at my hurt;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Who exalt themselves against me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14438\" class=\"text Ps-35-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>Let them shout for joy and be glad,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Who favor my righteous cause;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And let them say continually,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> \u201cLet the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> be magnified,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14439\" class=\"text Ps-35-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>And my tongue shall speak of Your righteousness<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-35-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And of Your praise all the day long.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">The occasion of this psalm is not given, but thematically it is similar to David&#8217;s plea in 1 Samuel 24:15, when Saul was seeking his death.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It would certainly be improper for David or any other sinful man, to present such petitions to God. But in such Psalms the petitioner is the sinless Man Christ Jesus, and He fittingly calls for the divine judgment upon those who hate Him; for in hating Him, they hate God and His people, and goodness, righteousness and truth. Hence, when judging the Pharisees (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3221\">Matthew 23:13-36<\/a><\/span>) He used language of similar terrific import. \u2014 Williams, page 324.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">Plead (v.1) = contend \u2014 a legal term, used of disputes at law<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">buckler (v.2) \u2014 thought to be a large shield, possibly carried by a shield-bearer (1 Samuel 17:7, 41)<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">angel of the Lord (vs. 5-6) \u2014 See Scofield quote in notes on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3962\">Psalm 34:7<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It is the Son of God who will sit as the ultimate judge of mankind (see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=628\">John 5:22<\/a><\/span>) \u2014 as intimated here by the repeated (and hence emphatic) reference in verses 5 and 6 to the angel of the Lord (i.e., the Son of God), which in turn anticipates His only other appearance (by that designation) in a specifically legal\/juridical context, in Zechariah 3, where it is He who judges the remnant of Israel (symbolized by Joshua the high priest), graciously acquitting them of the just accusation of unworthiness brought against them by &#8220;the accuser.&#8221; \u2014 Wechsler, page 106.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">To underscore their wickedness he further refers to them (v.19) as &#8220;those who hate me without cause&#8221; (as again in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6248\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 69:4<\/span><\/a>), which description is cited by Jesus Himself with reference to those among the Jewish people of His day who, without cause, likewise despised and rejected Him as their Messiah (see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=853\">John 15:25<\/a><\/span>). \u2014 Wechsler, page 106.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Ps-35-10\"><span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, who <i>is<\/i> like You<\/span> (v.10) \u2014 Also part of the song Moses and the people of Israel sang after the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 15:11).<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14422\" class=\"text Ps-35-11\">fierce witnesses<\/span> (v.11) = lit. &#8220;witnesses of wrong&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"text Ps-35-11\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">they ask me <i>things<\/i> that I do not know (v.11) \u2014 &#8220;They laid to my charge&#8221; \u2014 The idea being that his enemies sought to elicit by questions some grounds for accusation (Mark 14:55; Luke 11:53; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=903\">John 18:19<\/a><\/span>). \u2014 Meyer, page 48.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">If Meyer is correct, this give credence to a Messianic theme in this psalm.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Ps-35-13\">my prayer would return to my own heart<\/span> (v.13) \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2830\">Matthew 10:13<\/a><\/span>; Luke 10:6 \u2014 The idea is that his prayer, while not accomplishing what he wished, would result in his own blessing<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14427\" class=\"text Ps-35-16\">ungodly mockers<\/span> (v.16) \u2014 These were paid jesters who were hired to amuse the guests at a banquet. \u2014 Scofield, page 616<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">Lord (v.17) = Adonai = Master<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">precious (v.17) \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3877\">Psalm 22:20<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">wink (v.19) \u2014 Proverbs 6:12-14: <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Prov-6-12\">A worthless person, a wicked man, w<\/span><span class=\"text Prov-6-12\">alks with a perverse mouth;<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-16554\" class=\"text Prov-6-13\"> he winks with his eyes, h<\/span><span class=\"text Prov-6-13\">e shuffles his feet, h<\/span><span class=\"text Prov-6-13\">e points with his fingers;<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-16555\" class=\"text Prov-6-14\"> perversity is in his heart, h<\/span><span class=\"text Prov-6-14\">e devises evil continually, h<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"text Prov-6-14\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">e sows discord<\/span><\/em>.
