Ps-21-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1\u00a0<\/span>The king shall have joy in Your strength, O <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>;<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14194\" class=\"text Ps-21-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>You have given him his heart\u2019s desire,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And have not withheld the request of his lips. <span class=\"selah\">Selah<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14195\" class=\"text Ps-21-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>For You meet him with the blessings of goodness;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You set a crown of pure gold upon his head.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14196\" class=\"text Ps-21-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>He asked life from You, and You gave it to him\u2014<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Length of days forever and ever.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14197\" class=\"text Ps-21-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>His glory is great in Your salvation;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Honor and majesty You have placed upon him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14198\" class=\"text Ps-21-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>For You have made him most blessed forever;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You have made him exceedingly glad with Your presence.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14199\" class=\"text Ps-21-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>For the king trusts in the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14200\" class=\"text Ps-21-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Your hand will find all Your enemies;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Your right hand will find those who hate You.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14201\" class=\"text Ps-21-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> shall swallow them up in His wrath,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And the fire shall devour them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14202\" class=\"text Ps-21-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Their offspring You shall destroy from the earth,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And their descendants from among the sons of men.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14203\" class=\"text Ps-21-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>For they intended evil against You;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">They devised a plot which they are not able to perform.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14204\" class=\"text Ps-21-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore You will make them turn their back;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You will make ready Your arrows on Your string toward their faces.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14205\" class=\"text Ps-21-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Be exalted, O <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, in Your own strength!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-21-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">We will sing and praise Your power.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">Where <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3871\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 20<\/span><\/a> pleads for victory, Psalm 21 celebrates it, although the victory may still be future (v.8). The connection can be seen by comparing <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3871\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 20:4<\/span><\/a> with Psalm 21:2.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The psalm contains two sections. The first, verses 1-7; the second, verses 8-13. In the first section, Jehovah is addressed; in the second, Messiah is addressed. The speaker in the psalm is Israel (v.13). The occasion intended in verses 1-7 is the morning of Messiah&#8217;s resurrection, and in verses 8-13 the morning of Israel&#8217;s restoration. \u2014 Williams, page 312.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">selah (v.2) \u2014 a suspension of music, a pause<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">With respect to (Hebrew) grammar of verse 7, the first clause represents the basis of the second clause \u2014 i.e., because the aforementioned king trusts in the Lord, therefore the lovingkindness (i.e., the irrevocable paternal solicitude) of the Most High will be applied to him and he will not be shaken \u2014 referring to the eternal state in God&#8217;s presence. \u2014 Wechsler, page 71<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Most High (v.7) \u2014 This title belongs to Melchizedek&#8217;s God (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4696\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 14:18<\/span><\/a>) whom Abram identified as Yahweh (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4696\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 14:22<\/span><\/a>) &#8230; As a title it signifies supreme dignity, unhampered power and universal sway. \u2014 Guthrie, page 464.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">fiery oven (v.9) \u2014 The notion of God&#8217;s sovereignty in maintaining His promised solicitude towards His faithful is also intimated by the expression &#8220;fiery oven,&#8221; which recalls the phraseology of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4704\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 15:17<\/span><\/a>, in which God sovereignly ratifies His unconditional promise to Abraham. \u2014 Wechsler, page 71.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">turn their back (v.12) = retreat, flee<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">in Your own strength (v.13) \u2014 The expression &#8230; here serves as a bookend with the same phrase at the beginning of this psalm, and underscored the true (and only enduring) source of strength of the godly king. \u2014 Wechsler, page 71<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">I am no Hebrew or Old Testament scholar, and I&#8217;m new to the study of the Psalms. But the Messianic theme of this psalm seems obvious to me, and I am amazed that only two of my nine commentaries mention it. The conclusion of Williams (quoted above) makes by far the most sense to me.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the Chief Musician.
