A Psalm of David.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-20-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>May the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> answer you in the day of trouble;<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">May the name of the God of Jacob defend you;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14185\" class=\"text Ps-20-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>May He send you help from the sanctuary,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And strengthen you out of Zion;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14186\" class=\"text Ps-20-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>May He remember all your offerings,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And accept your burnt sacrifice. <span class=\"selah\">Selah<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14187\" class=\"text Ps-20-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>May He grant you according to your heart\u2019s desire,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And fulfill all your purpose.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14188\" class=\"text Ps-20-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>We will rejoice in your salvation,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And in the name of our God we will set up our banners!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">May the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> fulfill all your petitions.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14189\" class=\"text Ps-20-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>Now I know that the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> saves His anointed;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He will answer him from His holy heaven<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">With the saving strength of His right hand.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14190\" class=\"text Ps-20-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But we will remember the name of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> our God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14191\" class=\"text Ps-20-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>They have bowed down and fallen;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But we have risen and stand upright.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14192\" class=\"text Ps-20-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Save, <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-20-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">May the King answer us when we call.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">Thought by some commentaries to be a psalm recited by soldiers before beginning a battle. The first five verses were sung in chorus, the fifth by the king alone, and the last three by the chorus. The next psalm, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3874\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 21<\/span><\/a>, is a psalm of thanksgiving after a victorious battle.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">name (v.1) \u2014 all that God has revealed about His character and the association between His name and His provision of spiritual and physical deliverance<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">God of Jacob (v.1) \u2014 referring to the Redeemer who rescued Jacob (Israel) from Egypt<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">sanctuary (v.2) = holy thing, holiness \u2014 not the usual word for sanctuary<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">offerings &#8230; burnt sacrifice (v.3) \u2014 The Israelite practice of presenting sacrifices and offerings before a military campaign was an act of devotion and submission to the Lord (1 Samuel 7:9-10; 13:9-12). Their purpose was not primarily to atone for sin but to seek God&#8217;s favor and to consecrate oneself for war. As dedicatory offerings, they were burned on the altar so as to make &#8220;an aroma pleasing to the Lord&#8221; (Leviticus 1:13). \u2014 Barker, page 818.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14189\" class=\"text Ps-20-6\">Now I know that the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> saves His anointed<\/span> (v.6) \u2014 David knew this from personal experience. &#8220;I know&#8221; is experiential knowledge.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">His holy heaven (v.6) = lit. &#8220;the heaven of His holiness&#8221; as distinct from the created heaven of the universe<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">horses (v.7) \u2014 Israel&#8217;s kings were told not to accumulate a lot of horses (Deuteronomy 17:16) because their trust was to be in the Lord, not in their might.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">King (v.9) \u2014 referring to God, indicated by the parallelism between this statement and the opening one in verse 1<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">us (v.9) \u2014 David and the Israelites<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the Chief Musician.
