A Psalm of David the servant of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, who spoke to the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> the words of this song on the day that the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-18-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>I will love You, O <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, my strength.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14121\" class=\"text Ps-18-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14122\" class=\"text Ps-18-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>I will call upon the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, who is worthy to be praised;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>The pangs of death surrounded me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14124\" class=\"text Ps-18-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The snares of death confronted me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14125\" class=\"text Ps-18-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>In my distress I called upon the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And cried out to my God;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He heard my voice from His temple,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And my cry came before Him, even to His ears.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14126\" class=\"text Ps-18-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Then the earth shook and trembled;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The foundations of the hills also quaked and were shaken,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Because He was angry.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14127\" class=\"text Ps-18-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Smoke went up from His nostrils,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And devouring fire from His mouth;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-8\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Coals were kindled by it.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14128\" class=\"text Ps-18-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>He bowed the heavens also, and came down<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-9\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> With darkness under His feet.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14129\" class=\"text Ps-18-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>And He rode upon a cherub, and flew;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He flew upon the wings of the wind.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14130\" class=\"text Ps-18-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>He made darkness His secret place;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> His canopy around Him was dark waters<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And thick clouds of the skies.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14131\" class=\"text Ps-18-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>From the brightness before Him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> His thick clouds passed with hailstones and coals of fire.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14132\" class=\"text Ps-18-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> thundered from heaven,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And the Most High uttered His voice,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Hailstones and coals of fire.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14133\" class=\"text Ps-18-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-14\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Lightnings in abundance, and He vanquished them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14134\" class=\"text Ps-18-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>Then the channels of the sea were seen,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The foundations of the world were uncovered<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> At Your rebuke, O <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14135\" class=\"text Ps-18-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>He sent from above, He took me;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-16\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He drew me out of many waters.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14136\" class=\"text Ps-18-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>He delivered me from my strong enemy,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> From those who hated me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> For they were too strong for me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14137\" class=\"text Ps-18-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>They confronted me in the day of my calamity,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> But the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> was my support.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14138\" class=\"text Ps-18-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>He also brought me out into a broad place;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He delivered me because He delighted in me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14139\" class=\"text Ps-18-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> rewarded me according to my righteousness;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> According to the cleanness of my hands<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He has recompensed me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14140\" class=\"text Ps-18-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>For I have kept the ways of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-21\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And have not wickedly departed from my God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14141\" class=\"text Ps-18-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>For all His judgments were before me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And I did not put away His statutes from me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14142\" class=\"text Ps-18-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>I was also blameless before Him,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-23\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And I kept myself from my iniquity.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14143\" class=\"text Ps-18-24\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> has recompensed me according to my righteousness,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-24\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> According to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14144\" class=\"text Ps-18-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-25\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14145\" class=\"text Ps-18-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>With the pure You will show Yourself pure;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-26\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14146\" class=\"text Ps-18-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>For You will save the humble people,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-27\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> But will bring down haughty looks.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14147\" class=\"text Ps-18-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>For You will light my lamp;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-28\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> my God will enlighten my darkness.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14148\" class=\"text Ps-18-29\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>For by You I can run against a troop,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-29\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> By my God I can leap over a wall.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14149\" class=\"text Ps-18-30\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">30\u00a0<\/sup>As for God, His way is perfect;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-30\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The word of the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> is proven;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-30\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> He is a shield to all who trust in Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14150\" class=\"text Ps-18-31\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">31\u00a0<\/sup>For who is God, except the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>?<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-31\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And who is a rock, except our God?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14151\" class=\"text Ps-18-32\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">32\u00a0<\/sup>It is God who arms me with strength,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-32\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And makes my way perfect.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14152\" class=\"text Ps-18-33\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">33\u00a0<\/sup>He makes my feet like the feet of deer,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-33\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And sets me on my high places.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14153\" class=\"text Ps-18-34\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">34\u00a0<\/sup>He teaches my hands to make war,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-34\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14154\" class=\"text Ps-18-35\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">35\u00a0<\/sup>You have also given me the shield of Your salvation;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-35\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Your right hand has held me up,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-35\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Your gentleness has made me great.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14155\" class=\"text Ps-18-36\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">36\u00a0<\/sup>You enlarged my path under me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-36\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> So my feet did not slip.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14156\" class=\"text Ps-18-37\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">37\u00a0<\/sup>I have pursued my enemies and overtaken them;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-37\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Neither did I turn back again till they were destroyed.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14157\" class=\"text Ps-18-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">38\u00a0<\/sup>I have wounded them,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> So that they could not rise;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-38\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> They have fallen under my feet.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14158\" class=\"text Ps-18-39\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">39\u00a0<\/sup>For You have armed me with strength for the battle;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-39\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14159\" class=\"text Ps-18-40\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">40\u00a0<\/sup>You have also given me the necks of my enemies,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-40\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> So that I destroyed those who hated me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14160\" class=\"text Ps-18-41\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">41\u00a0<\/sup>They cried out, but there was none to save;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-41\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Even to the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, but He did not answer them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14161\" class=\"text Ps-18-42\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">42\u00a0<\/sup>Then I beat them as fine as the dust before the wind;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-42\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> I cast them out like dirt in the streets.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14162\" class=\"text Ps-18-43\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">43\u00a0<\/sup>You have delivered me from the strivings of the people;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-43\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> You have made me the head of the nations;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-43\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> A people I have not known shall serve me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14163\" class=\"text Ps-18-44\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">44\u00a0<\/sup>As soon as they hear of me they obey me;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-44\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> The foreigners submit to me.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14164\" class=\"text Ps-18-45\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">45\u00a0<\/sup>The foreigners fade away,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-45\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And come frightened from their hideouts.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14165\" class=\"text Ps-18-46\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">46\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> lives!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-46\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Blessed be my Rock!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-46\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Let the God of my salvation be exalted.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14166\" class=\"text Ps-18-47\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47\u00a0<\/sup>It is God who avenges me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-47\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And subdues the peoples under me;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14167\" #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">50\u00a0<\/sup>Great deliverance He gives to His king,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-50\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And shows mercy to His anointed,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-18-50\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> To David and his descendants forevermore.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Holy Spirit states in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=472\">Romans 15:9<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1650\">Hebrews 2:13<\/a><\/span>, that the speaker here is the Messiah, and that the psalm predicts the sufferings of His first advent (vs.20-36), the glories of His second (vs.37-50), and the majesty of the resurrection which connects the two (vs. 1-19).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Messiah was sinless, and He will in righteousness destroy out of His future kingdom all the workers of iniquity (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2939\">Matthew 13:41<\/a><\/span>, Revelation 12:12 and 19:1-5). This explains the seemingly self-righteous language of the speaker and His exultation over the destruction of His enemies. \u2014 Williams, page 309.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">Another version of this psalm by David is recorded in 2 Samuel 22. It was rewritten slightly for public use.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">servant of the Lord (heading) \u2014 used elsewhere in Scripture twice of Joshua, but otherwise almost exclusively of Moses or, prophetically, of the Messiah. The only other place it is used of David is in the heading of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3975\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 36<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span class=\"text Ps-18-1\">on the day that the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Sau<\/span>l (heading) \u2014 referring not to the day on which Saul died (1 Samuel 31:6), nor even the day on which David was finally enthroned king of all Israel (2 Samuel 5:3), but at that point much later in his reign where the iteration of this psalm is presented, in 2 Samuel 22, after his many victorious wars with the Philistines and others and after the revolts of Absalom (2 Samuel 18) and Sheba (2 Samuel 20). \u2014 Wechsler, pages 62-63.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">I will love You (v.1) = <em>racham<\/em> = compassion, love very tenderly, as with a mother&#8217;s love<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">Verse 2 (or, at least the 2 Samuel version of it) is quoted in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1650\">Hebrews 2:13<\/a><\/span>.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">horn of my salvation (v.2) \u2014 symbolizes strength and victorious power see Deuteronomy 33:17; 1 Kings 22:11; Luke 1:69 (where the term is used by Zacharias in reference to Jesus Christ). The reference here, I&#8217;m pretty sure, is to the strength of animals who can attack and defend themselves with their horns.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"text Ps-18-3\">So shall I be saved from my enemies<\/span> (v.3) \u2014 see Luke 1:71<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">pangs of death (v.4) = cords, ropes \u2014 giving the sense of being trapped or tied up \u2014 see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1285\">Acts 2:24<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">bowed (v.9) = stretched out<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14129\" class=\"text Ps-18-10\">He rode upon a cherub<\/span> (v.10) \u2014 speed &#8230; hearkening to the imagery of the divine cloud of glory dwelling over the ark, which was crowned with cherubim [a type of angelic beings] \u2014 Wechsler, page 64<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">recompensed (v.24) = returned<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">merciful (v.25) = the Merciful One, a divine title<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">devious (v.26) = crooked, perverse<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">shrewd (v.26) = astute<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14154\" class=\"text Ps-18-35\">the shield of Your salvation<\/span> (v.35) \u2014 The Hebrew term for salvation (<em>yesha<\/em>) is one that often signifies comprehensive deliverance (i.e., both internal-spiritual and, ultimately, external-physical; cf., e.g., David&#8217;s use of the term in 2 Samuel 23:5; 1 Chronicles 16:35; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3896\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalms 24:5<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3900\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">25:5<\/span><\/a>). Not surprisingly, therefore, it is this term that is employed in the name of David&#8217;s Seed, the Savior Himself, Jesus (Hebrew <em>Yeshua<\/em>, &#8220;he saves\/will save&#8221;; cf. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2623\">Matthew 1:21<\/a><\/span>). \u2014 Wechsler, page 65.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">Verse 49 is quoted in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=472\">Romans 15:9<\/a><\/span>.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">By this statement, in view of its citation in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=472\">Romans 15:9<\/a><\/span>, David means specifically that he will proclaim among the Gentiles (1) God&#8217;s faithfulness in upholding &#8220;the promises given to the fathers&#8221; (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4667\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 12:1-3<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4704\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">15:8<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4739\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">17:7-8<\/span><\/a>, etc.), which includes God&#8217;s promise to David (see 2 Samuel 7:8-17), and (2) God&#8217;s mercy \u2014 both of which find their greatest expression in the person and work of Christ. \u2014 Wechsler, page 66.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">There are a number of virtues and qualities, and happenings on earth and in heaven, and in the universe mentioned in this Psalm that could not be applicable to David, but are applicable to the Messiah, who was the Son of David according to the flesh.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 5. The sorrows of Hades did not compass David, neither did the snares of death come upon him before he wrote this Psalm. Neither was it a prophecy of something he would go through when he died. It is applicable only to the Messiah.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 7. The earthquake and the smoke from God&#8217;s nostrils accompanied by fire from God&#8217;s mouth was not an experience of David, but was the experience of David&#8217;s greater Son.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 9. Darkness coming over the earth when the servant of God died was not the experience of David, but it did occur when Jesus of Nazareth was crucified.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 10. &#8220;God riding upon a cherub and the wings of the wind&#8221; in order to reach His suffering Servant was not the experience of David. It is natural to think of God taking such concern for His Son.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verses 12-15. Thick clouds, hail stones, coals of fire; the Lord God thundering in the heavens and shouting His voice through the universe, and sending out His arrows, fierce lightning, and channels of water over flowing, tell of things occurring in the universe when God&#8217;s Son went down into Hades. If the language is figurative it represents something far more terrible than is in view, but we see no reason for calling the language figurative.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 20. The sufferer is rewarded according to His righteousness and cleanness of His hands. David could not claim a reward on this level, but he was inspired to look into the future and see the rewarding of the Messiah.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 21. David could not claim that he had not departed from his God. No one but the greater Son of David \u2014 the Christ of God could make such a claim.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 22. David could not have claimed never to have departed from God&#8217;s statutes.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 23. David never claimed to have kept himself from all iniquity. He was a sinner saved by the grace of God.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 24. Repeats verse 20, perhaps for emphasis.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 32. David could not claim that he was perfect before God.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Verse 36. David could not claim that his feet never slipped.
