A Psalm of David.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-14-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>The fool has said in his heart,<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> \u201cThere is no God.\u201d<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> They are corrupt,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> They have done abominable works,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> There is none who does good.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14083\" class=\"text Ps-14-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> looks down from heaven upon the children of men,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14084\" class=\"text Ps-14-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>They have all turned aside,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> They have together become corrupt;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> There is none who does good,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> No, not one.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14085\" class=\"text Ps-14-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Who eat up my people as they eat bread,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> And do not call on the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14086\" class=\"text Ps-14-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>There they are in great fear,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> For God is with the generation of the righteous.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14087\" class=\"text Ps-14-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>You shame the counsel of the poor,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> But the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> is his refuge.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14088\" class=\"text Ps-14-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> When the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> brings back the captivity of His people,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-14-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p class=\"line\">Very similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4308\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 53<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>For the heading, see notes on <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3624\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalms 3<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3627\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>As with the preceding four psalms, Williams sees this as having an application during the Tribulation and the Second Coming of Christ.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Though the focus of the psalm is on the lack of faith of the Gentile nations in and around Canaan and their opposition to the God of Israel and His people (see especially verses 4-7), phraseological similarities between verses 1-3 and other Old Testament passages, as well as the citation of these verses in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=278\">Romans 3:10-12<\/a><\/span>, indicate that the indictment for lack of faith (= folly, biblically defined) applies in principle to &#8220;both Jew and Gentiles.&#8221; \u2014 Wechsler, page 52<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>fool (v.1) = one with a withered intellect \u2014 In Scripture, it refers to the wicked who aggressively and intentionally boast of their independence from God and His commandments, who deny His existence or deny the existence of divine justice.<\/h3>\n<h3>abominable (v.1) = abhorred, detested<\/h3>\n<h3>looks down (v.2) \u2014 referring to God&#8217;s assessment of the heart of men<\/h3>\n<h3>That this passage is applied to Jews as well as Gentiles is shown by the use of the same phrases in other passages applying directly to Israel. For example, &#8220;they have become corrupt&#8221; (Deuteronomy 31:29); &#8220;they have turned aside&#8221; (Isaiah 1:23).<\/h3>\n<h3>there (v.5) = at that time<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">David here concludes by focusing on the object of faith for the righteous among his people (vs.4-5) \u2014 to wit: the future and final salvation of Israel, when God restores the fortunes of His people and makes them what they were always intended to be: &#8220;a kingdom of priests and a holy nation&#8221; (Exodus 19:6), redeemed, righteous, and at rest. \u2014 Wechsler, page 54.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">I think what the psalmist is getting at here is that those who deny God&#8217;s existence (fools), or deny that He is concerned over the fate of men, or deny that He will judge them, will be very afraid when the day of God&#8217;s judgment comes. They claim to live apart from God, but when Jesus Christ returns, they will have no doubt about who He is or what their fate will be. The righteous, in the meantime, are suffering persecution but they can be assured that God will keep His promises and bring salvation from trouble and eternal rest.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the Chief Musician.
