A Psalm of David.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<div class=\"poetry\">\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"chapter-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span class=\"text Ps-11-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">1 <\/span>In the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> I put my trust;<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">How can you say to my soul,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cFlee as a bird to your mountain\u201d?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14062\" class=\"text Ps-11-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>For look! The wicked bend their bow,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">They make ready their arrow on the string,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-2\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14063\" class=\"text Ps-11-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>If the foundations are destroyed,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-3\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What can the righteous do?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14064\" class=\"text Ps-11-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> is in His holy temple,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u2019s throne is in heaven;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">His eyes behold,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">His eyelids test the sons of men.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14065\" class=\"text Ps-11-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>The <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> tests the righteous,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14066\" class=\"text Ps-11-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>Upon the wicked He will rain coals;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Fire and brimstone and a burning wind<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Shall be the portion of their cup.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-14067\" class=\"text Ps-11-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>For the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> is righteous,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">He loves righteousness;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span class=\"text Ps-11-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">His countenance beholds the upright.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3759\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalms 9<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3807\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10<\/span><\/a> having portrayed the Lawless One, Psalms 11-14 describe the lawlessness which will characterize his kingdom, and the consequent oppression and suffering of the righteous. \u2014 Williams, page 304.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">This psalm is thought by some commentaries, to have been written when David was pursued by Saul.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Though no historical event is mentioned in the heading, the imagery of David&#8217;s words in verse 1 (&#8220;Flee as a bird to your mountain&#8221;) bear a close similarity to his words in 1 Samuel 26:20 (the king of Israel has come out &#8230; just as one hunts a partridge in the mountains&#8221;), suggesting the latter as a likely venue. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 45-46.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">After opening with a statement of his faith in God, David tells of the counsel he is receiving beginning with the final line in verse 1 \u2014 &#8220;Flee as a bird &#8230;&#8221; \u2014 and continuing through the end of verse 3. This may have been the counsel of friends or of\u00a0 David&#8217;s own heart (1 Samuel 27:1). The final four verses return to the subject and David&#8217;s reason for his faith\u2014 he knows that God is watching and will punish the wicked and reward the righteous with His presence.<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">bird (v.1) = sparrow \u2014 the littlest of birds<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">wicked (v.2) \u2014 plural \u2014 a multitude of wicked<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">foundations (v.3) \u2014 a metaphor for the order of society and the authorities (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6419\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 75:3<\/span><\/a>; 82:5; Ezekiel 30:4)<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">holy temple (v.4) \u2014 referring <em>not<\/em> to the earthly temple (since this term for &#8220;temple&#8221; [lit. &#8220;sanctuary&#8221;] is used in the Old Testament for the fixed structure later built by Solomon in Jerusalem, not for the tent-tabernacle), but to God&#8217;s heavenly temple, of which the earthly one was only &#8220;a copy and shadow.&#8221; This point is further driven home by the parallel statement, &#8220;the Lord&#8217;s throne is in heaven&#8221; (v.4), which also indicates God&#8217;s dual role \u2014 embodied and eternally fulfilled in the Son of God \u2014 as both king (per the reference to His throne) and priest (per the reference to His being in the holy temple), which combination was otherwise forbidden among the Israelites. \u2014 Wechsler, page 46<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">tests (v.5) = tries \u2014 used for refining (making purer and better) metals<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\">violence (v.5) = the Hebrew word used here always refers to <em>wicked<\/em> violence \u2014 not that which God does to the wicked for instructs His people to do<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"line\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span class=\"text Ps-11-7\">His countenance beholds the upright<\/span> (v.7) \u2014 Among the monotheistic religions of the world this is a unique (and perhaps the greatest hope), according to which the believer looks forward not simply to worshiping an eternally transcendent and intangible God, but One who, consistent with His initial desire at creation, seeks to relate to man in all the ideal ways that we were made to exist and relate. It is in Jesus, specifically, that God&#8217;s &#8220;face&#8221; \u2014 that is, His person and presence \u2014 is revealed, and it is He whom the Christian, with Paul, looks forward yearningly to behold &#8220;face to face&#8221; and &#8220;know fully&#8221; even as we are &#8220;fully known&#8221; by Him (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2434\">1 Corinthians 13:12<\/a><\/span>). \u2014 Wechsler, page 47<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the Chief Musician.
