{"id":3751,"date":"2015-08-15T14:13:13","date_gmt":"2015-08-15T20:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3751"},"modified":"2022-12-21T06:58:42","modified_gmt":"2022-12-21T12:58:42","slug":"ephesians-417-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3751","title":{"rendered":"Ephesians 4:17-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span class=\"text Eph-4-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29291\" class=\"text Eph-4-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29292\" class=\"text Eph-4-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>this I say (v.17) \u2014 what Paul is about to write<\/h3>\n<h3>therefore (v.17) \u2014 based on all Paul has said so far in the book but also resuming his thoughts from <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3735\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">vs. 1-3<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>testify (v.17) = solemnly declare<\/h3>\n<h3>in the Lord (v.17) \u2014 the declaration is one made by the Lord Himself<\/h3>\n<h3>walk (v.17) = conduct one&#8217;s self, order one&#8217;s behavior<\/h3>\n<h3>futility (v.17) = aimless, without result<\/h3>\n<h3>mind (v.17) = intellectual faculty, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">also<\/span> the faculty for recognizing spiritual truth and moral rightness<\/h3>\n<h3>understanding (v.18) = the faculty of understanding, feeling, desiring<\/h3>\n<h3>darkened (v.18) = blinded \u2014 the tense indicates a process completed in the past with continuing results<\/h3>\n<h3>alienated (v.18) = estranged \u2014 shut out from one&#8217;s fellowship and unity \u2014 here, from God and true life<\/h3>\n<h3>ignorance (v.18) = not merely lack of intellect, but an ignorance of divine things, an inexcusable want of knowledge \u2014 this ignorance is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in them<\/span>; the cause is not external, casual or superficial \u2014 it is in their own nature and heart (see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1317\">Acts 3:17<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1709\">Acts 17:30<\/a><\/span>; 1 Peter 1:14).<\/h3>\n<h3>blindness (v.18) = hardness, covered with a callous (see Mark 3:5; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=420\">Romans 11:25<\/a><\/span>)<\/h3>\n<h3>who (v.19) = who are of such a nature that<\/h3>\n<h3>being past feeling (v.19) = to cease to feel pain or grief, insensible to pain, apathetic, morally insensible<\/h3>\n<h3>given themselves over (v.19) = give into the hands of another, to betray, to give one&#8217;s self up<\/h3>\n<h3>lewdness (v.19) = wanton lawless insolence \u2014 acknowledging no restraints \u2014 a complete surrender of self<\/h3>\n<h3>to work (v.19) \u2014 the word has the sense of a trade, of the prosecution of a business<\/h3>\n<h3>all uncleanness (v.19) = every kind of uncleanness, moral uncleanness in the widest sense<\/h3>\n<h3>greediness (v.19) \u2014 the condition of the mind in which they did the uncleanness<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>17\u00a0This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18\u00a0having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because &hellip;
