{"id":3727,"date":"2015-07-18T09:10:30","date_gmt":"2015-07-18T15:10:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3727"},"modified":"2022-12-16T06:24:18","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T12:24:18","slug":"ephesians-317-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3727","title":{"rendered":"Ephesians 3:17-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span id=\"en-NKJV-29268\" class=\"text Eph-3-16\"><\/span> <em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29269\" class=\"text Eph-3-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29270\" class=\"text Eph-3-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height \u2014<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29271\" class=\"text Eph-3-19\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">dwell (v.17) \u2014 The personal presence of the Lord Jesus in the heart of the believer is not in view here. That is taken for granted. The word &#8220;dwell&#8221; is <em>katoikesai<\/em>, made up of <em>oikeo<\/em>, &#8220;to live in as a home,&#8221; and <em>kata<\/em>, &#8220;down,&#8221; thus &#8220;to settle down and be at home.&#8221; The tense is aorist, showing finality. The expanded translation is; &#8220;that Christ might finally settle down and feel completely at home in your hearts.&#8221; \u2014 Wuest, page 88<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>through faith (v.17) \u2014 not faith for salvation, but faith that He will grant the fulness of the Spirit<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The words, &#8220;being rooted&#8221; and &#8220;grounded&#8221; are perfect tense participles in the Greek text. They are the result of the strengthening by the Spirit and the consequent at-home-ness of the Lord Jesus in the believer&#8217;s heart and His fellowship with him. The word &#8220;rooted&#8221; has the idea of securely settled, and &#8220;grounded,&#8221; that of deeply founded. Love here is that love which the Holy Spirit produces and with which He floods the heart of the yielded saint. The inner spiritual condition of the heart enables the saint &#8220;to comprehend&#8221; (v.18) and &#8220;to know&#8221; (v.19). \u2014 Wuest, page 89<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>love (vs. 17 and 19) = agape<\/h3>\n<h3>able (v.18) = to be eminently able, to have full strength<\/h3>\n<h3>comprehend (v.18) = to lay hold of so as to make one&#8217;s own \u2014 to take full possession of \u2014 to apprehend \u2014 conceptual knowledge<\/h3>\n<h3>with all saints (v.18) \u2014 this spiritual capacity is available to all saints who receive the fulness of the Holy Spirit as a result of their faith<\/h3>\n<h3>width &#8230; length &#8230; depth &#8230; height (v.18) \u2014 an expression of the vastness of the love of Christ<\/h3>\n<h3>to know (v.19) = knowledge gained by experience \u2014 The conceptual knowledge gained in v.18 becomes experiential knowledge as we realize the love of Christ<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">passes (v.19) \u2014 The word &#8220;surpassing&#8221; is a participle of <em>hyperballo<\/em>, &#8220;to throw over or beyond, to transcend, exceed, excel.&#8221; This love surpasses knowledge, <em>gnosis<\/em>, &#8220;experiential knowledge.&#8221; That is, no matter how much the saint experiences of the love of Christ, yet there are oceans of love in the great heart of God that have not been touched by his experience. \u2014 Wuest, page 90<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>with (v.19) = to, unto \u2014 to the measure or standard of<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">fullness of God (v.19) \u2014 the fullness which God imparts through the dwelling of Christ in the heart; Christ, in whom the Father was pleased that all the fullness should dwell (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2052\">Colossians 1:19<\/a><\/span>), and in whom dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2069\">Colossians 2:9<\/a><\/span>). \u2014 Wuest, pages 90-91<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>I study Scripture in small chunks so I can go slowly and be sure that I&#8217;m not missing anything. But I need to remember that the smaller passages need to be studied in the context of their surrounding, larger passages.
