A Psalm of David.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">O Lord, heal me, for my bones are troubled. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3 My soul also is greatly troubled;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But You, O Lord \u2014 how long?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4 Return, O Lord, deliver me!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Oh, save me for Your mercies&#8217; sake! <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5 For in death there is no remembrance of You;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the grave who will give You thanks?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6 I am weary with my groaning;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">All night I make my bed swim;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I drench my couch with my tears. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7 My eye wastes away because of grief;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">It grows old because of all my enemies.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8 Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9 The Lord has heard my supplication;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Lord will receive my prayer. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10 Let all my enemies be ashamed and greatly troubled;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Let them turn back and be ashamed suddenly.<\/span> <\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>This is the first penitential psalm. The others are <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3940\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">32<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3992\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">38<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4296\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">51<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8123\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">102<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8532\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">130<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8598\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">143<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>Lord (5x in vs. 1-5) = Yahweh \u2014 God&#8217;s covenant name<\/h3>\n<h3>rebuke and chasten (v.1) \u2014 primarily the responsibilities of a father \u2014 David is approaching God as his Father.<\/h3>\n<h3>mercy (v.2) = steadfast love \u2014 specifically &#8220;covenant love&#8221; for the Lord&#8217;s own.<\/h3>\n<h3>David begins with his troubles (vs. 2-3), but ends with the troubles the Lord will bring upon his enemies (v.10).<\/h3>\n<h3>David&#8217;s reasons why God should deliver him are 1) God&#8217;s mercy (v.4); and 2) he can&#8217;t worship God if he&#8217;s dead (v.5).<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Though David&#8217;s distressing circumstances may be a just expression of God&#8217;s loving chastisement for his sin(s), they are nonetheless a source of anxiety and \u2014 to a certain extent \u2014 even depression. These are natural human responses to ongoing and unfavorable circumstances, which, as is clearly the case here with David, can take quite a toll on both body and mind. Such responses are not sinful, and, as modeled here by David, it is an acceptable \u2014 even incumbent \u2014 part of worship for us to bare the turmoil and distress of our hearts to God, who as our loving and sympathetic Father (cf. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1722\">Hebrews 4:15<\/a><\/span>) earnestly desired to hear us. \u2014 Wechsler, pages 34-35.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Jesus quoted vs. 8 in His Sermon on the Mount (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2782\">Matthew 7:23<\/a><\/span>) of those who proclaim to do works for God but don&#8217;t do His will.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">As typically in David&#8217;s psalms of lament, complaint and petition, he ends on a positive, confident note, characterized not by a look back at what God has done to resolve his situation, but rather by a look forward to what God will do \u2014 if not in this life, then unquestionably in the next, when all who do iniquity will finally be judged and David, in the company of those who love God, will stand in the full light of His presence (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3847\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 16:11<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8594\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">142:7<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Wechsler, page 35.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>A couple of the commentaries pointed out that David doesn&#8217;t seem to dwell on his sin in the psalm, or confess it. But he does believe that the tribulation caused by his enemies, and perhaps even his physical ailments in this case, are a result of God&#8217;s judgment for his sin(s).<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the Chief Musician.
