{"id":3648,"date":"2015-04-05T08:54:28","date_gmt":"2015-04-05T14:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3648"},"modified":"2023-05-06T06:16:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-06T12:16:49","slug":"titus-34-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3648","title":{"rendered":"Titus 3:4-7"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span id=\"en-NKJV-29927\" class=\"text Titus-3-3\"><\/span> <em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29928\" class=\"text Titus-3-4\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29929\" class=\"text Titus-3-5\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29930\" class=\"text Titus-3-6\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29931\" class=\"text Titus-3-7\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>God&#8217;s kindness and love (v.4) are in contrast with the &#8220;hateful, and hating one another&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3646\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v.3<\/span><\/a>) of our sin natures<\/h3>\n<h3>kindness (v.4) = goodness in action, imparting benefit<\/h3>\n<h3>love &#8230; toward man (v.4) \u2014 one word in Greek, <em>philanthropia<\/em>, from <em>phileo<\/em> &#8220;be fond of, show affection to&#8221; and <em>anthropos<\/em> &#8220;man&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>not by works of righteousness (v.5) = lit. &#8220;not out of works in righteousness&#8221; (Vine) or &#8220;not by works, those in the sphere of righteousness&#8221; (Wuest)<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">righteousness (v.5) \u2014 Paul is using the term &#8220;righteousness&#8221; in its classical sense, to merit salvation by the performance of deeds done in the sphere of righteousness as conceived of by the pagan Greeks. He uses the word in a like sense in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=311\">Romans 5:7<\/a><\/span>, &#8220;<em>For scarcely for a righteous man will one die<\/em>,&#8221; namely, a man who lives an outwardly moral, respectable, upright life. \u2014 Wuest, page 199<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>we (v.5) \u2014 emphasized in Greek \u2014 &#8220;we, ourselves&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>according to (v.5) \u2014 gives the sense of &#8220;dominated,&#8221; &#8220;controlled&#8221; \u2014 God was controlled by His mercy<\/h3>\n<h3>regeneration (v.5) = to become again \u2014 a new birth<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;again&#8221; [in &#8220;to become gain&#8221; or &#8220;regeneration&#8221;] is <em>anothen<\/em>, &#8220;the repetition of an act, the repeated act having the same source as the first act.&#8221; The source of the repeated act, namely, regeneration, is the Holy Spirit. The repeated act is the impartation of divine life to the believing sinner. The source of the first act is the Holy Spirit, and the act was that of the impartation of divine life to Adam in his creation (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4492\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 2:7<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Wuest, pages 199-200.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Here we have one of those figures of speech in which one thing is spoken of in two ways. &#8220;<em>The washing of regeneration<\/em>&#8221; and the &#8220;<em>renewing of the Holy Spirit<\/em>&#8221; are one and the same operation. And in the next verse we have another figure of speech, in which the Holy Spirit is spoken of as being &#8220;shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,&#8221; i.e., through the finished work of Christ the Holy Spirit washes, or cleanses, us thoroughly.
