A Psalm of David.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 Give ear to my words, O Lord,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Consider my meditation. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2 Give heed to the voice of my cry,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">My King and my God,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For to You I will pray. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the morning I will direct it to You,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And I will look up.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nor shall evil dwell with You. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5 The boastful shall not stand in Your sight;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You hate all workers of iniquity. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6 You shall destroy those who speak falsehood;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7 But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8 Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Make Your way straight before my face. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Their inward part is destruction;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Their throat is an open tomb;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">They flatter with their tongue. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10 Pronounce them guilty, O God!<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Let them fall by their own counsels;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For they have rebelled against You.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11 But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Let those also who love Your name<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Be joyful in You. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12 For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">With favor You will surround him as with a shield.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>The Psalm was sung in connection with regular morning (v.3) offerings in the temple and used in traditional Jewish morning prayers.<\/h3>\n<h3>give ear (v.1) = attend carefully and respond in the petitioner&#8217;s best interest<\/h3>\n<h3>meditation (v.1) = ponder, muse, reading and rereading the Word half-aloud<\/h3>\n<h3>direct (v.3) = set in order, arrange<\/h3>\n<h3>David focuses on God&#8217;s holiness (vs.4-6) by indicating that God is opposed to &#8220;wickedness,&#8221; &#8220;evil,&#8221; &#8220;iniquity,&#8221; &#8220;falsehood,&#8221; and &#8220;deceit.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>David focuses on God&#8217;s compassion (v.7) by expressing that he can only enter the temple because of God&#8217;s mercy.<\/h3>\n<h3>mercy (v.7) = steadfast love \u2014 specifically &#8220;covenant love&#8221; for the Lord&#8217;s own<\/h3>\n<h3>Verse 9 is quoted by Paul in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=278\">Romans 3:13<\/a><\/span>, showing that the enemies (v.8) are Jews and Gentiles because &#8220;they are all under sin&#8221; (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=277\">Romans 3:9<\/a><\/span>).<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">David&#8217;s petition is not only that God would protect him from physical harm (as in his military campaigns against the Philistines), but also that God would lead him in righteousness \u2014 including the Lord&#8217;s restraining him from taking merciless retribution upon Israelites outwardly opposed to him (like Nabal; see 1 Samuel 25:26) as well as the granting to him of discernment so as to avoid the counsel (as in Job 29:21 and Proverbs 1:31 \u2014 &#8220;devices&#8221; in NASB) of ungodly &#8220;allies&#8221; and advisors (like Joab: see 2 Samuel 3:24-30, 39) \u2014 Wechsler, page 33.<\/span><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To the Chief Musician.
