6\u00a0<\/sup>Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

7\u00a0<\/sup>in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

9\u00a0<\/sup>Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

10\u00a0<\/sup>not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

exhort (v.6) = “I beg of you, please” \u2014 not a strict demand but a loving urging<\/h3>\n

sober-minded (v.6) = of sound mind, self-controlled \u2014 the same word translated “temperate” in v.2 and “discreet” in v.5<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n

Paul directs his remarks directly to Titus in vs. 7 and 8, as Titus’s example is the best way to influence young men.<\/h3>\n

integrity (v.7) = absence of self-seeking or perverse motives<\/h3>\n

reverence (v.7) \u2014 dignity and solemnity when dealing with matters of doctrine and God’s Word<\/h3>\n

incorruptibility (v.7) \u2014 not in the best manuscripts<\/h3>\n

sound (v.8) = healthy, whole<\/h3>\n

you (v.8) \u2014 should be “us”<\/h3>\n

bondservants (v.9) = slaves \u2014 many of whom would be serving in pagan households<\/h3>\n

be obedient (v.9) \u2014 a military term for being in subjection, as in v.5<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

masters (v.9) = one who has absolute ownership and control over another \u2014 the Greek word from which we get “despot.”<\/h3>\n

well pleasing (v.9) = to give satisfaction<\/h3>\n

in all things (v.9) \u2014 goes with “be obedient”<\/h3>\n

answering back (v.9) = contradicting, thwarting the master’s plans and wishes<\/h3>\n

pilfering (v.10) = petty theft, embezzling<\/h3>\n

fidelity (v.10) = trustworthiness<\/h3>\n

adorn (v.10) = ornament, decorate, garnish, embellish with honor<\/h3>\n
