{"id":3609,"date":"2015-03-07T09:33:06","date_gmt":"2015-03-07T15:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3609"},"modified":"2023-05-01T06:33:33","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T12:33:33","slug":"titus-110-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3609","title":{"rendered":"Titus 1:10-11"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span class=\"text Titus-1-10\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29904\" class=\"text Titus-1-11\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>insubordinate (v.10) = cannot be subjected to control \u2014 the same word used of children in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3600\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 6<\/span><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3422\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 1:9<\/span><\/strong><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>idle talkers (v.10) = ones who utter empty, senseless things \u2014 devoid of force, truth, success, result<\/h3>\n<h3>deceivers (v.10) = mind deceivers<\/h3>\n<h3>especially (v.10) \u2014 the deceivers may not all have been Judaizers, but most of them, and certainly the most destructive among them, were<\/h3>\n<h3>those of the circumcision (v.10) \u2014 Judaizers<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The persons spoke of here were Christian Jews &#8230; that they were at least nominally Christians is also implied by the epithet &#8220;unruly&#8221; [insubordinate]. We cannot call those persons unruly on whose obedience we have no claim. \u2014 Wuest, page 186<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Those of &#8220;the circumcision,&#8221; at least many of them, were doubtless present at Pentecost, where some are mentioned as having come from Crete (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1274\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 2:5, 11<\/span><\/a>), but it appears that upon their return to Crete they had not even continued faithfully in the doctrine of the twelve, but had reverted to apostate Judaism with its Talmud and all its civil and religious laws \u2014 laws which seemed to excel even the Ten Commandments in righteousness, but which in reality condemned many practices which were wholly right and pure (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3611\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v.14<\/span><\/a>: cf., <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2965\">Matthew 15:1-8<\/a><\/span>). \u2014 Stam, pages 253-254.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>mouths must be stopped (v.11) = bridled<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;To stop the mouth&#8221; is <em>epistomizo<\/em>, originally &#8220;to put something into the mouth,&#8221; as a bit into a horse&#8217;s mouth. The noun form is used of the &#8220;stop&#8221; of a waterpipe.
