{"id":3593,"date":"2015-03-02T12:00:14","date_gmt":"2015-03-02T18:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3593"},"modified":"2023-04-26T09:58:17","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T15:58:17","slug":"titus-introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3593","title":{"rendered":"Titus \u2014 Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Titus was a Gentile (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=980\">Galatians 2:3<\/a><\/span>), introduced to Jesus Christ by the apostle Paul.<\/h3>\n<h3>His name is mentioned 12 times in the New Testament, all in Paul&#8217;s writings (never in Acts).<\/h3>\n<h3>Paul&#8217;s letter to Titus was probably written at about the same time as his first letter to Timothy, and certainly before his second letter to Timothy.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Titus was appointed to undertake tasks requiring a great degree of responsibility and tact &#8230;:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">1. He accompanied Paul as as the Gentile representative to the great Council at Jerusalem, when Paul had been sent to defend Gentile liberty from circumcision and the Law (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=980\">Galatians 2:1-3<\/a><\/span>).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">2. He was sent by Paul to deal with serious irregularities in the church at Corinth, and particularly with their delinquency as stewards of the material wealth God had entrusted to them (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5045\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 8:6<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5053\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">16<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5040\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">7:15<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">3. He was commissioned to &#8220;set in order&#8221; the things that were wanting among the believers on the island of Crete (whose inhabitants were widely known for their moral irresponsibility), and to &#8220;ordain elders in every city&#8221; whose moral and spiritual standards were compatible with Christian leadership (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3611\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Titus 1:12-13<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Stam, page 231<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>It is not clear what Paul is referring to in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3581\">2 Timothy 4:10<\/a><\/span> \u2014 did Titus desert the apostle, or was he simply off ministering somewhere, or both?<\/h3>\n<h3>The resources I am using for this study are:<\/h3>\n<h3><em>Commentary on the Pastoral Epistles of Paul the Apostle<\/em>, by Cornelius R.
