May the Lord repay him according to his works.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29886\" class=\"text 2Tim-4-15\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>You also must beware of him, for he has greatly resisted our words.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them.<span id=\"en-NKJV-29888\" class=\"text 2Tim-4-17\"><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span class=\"text 2Tim-4-17\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29889\" class=\"text 2Tim-4-18\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Alexander the coppersmith (v.14) \u2014 a coppersmith was any worker in metal \u2014 Alexander was probably made statues of Diana. Paul&#8217;s gospel was hurting his trade. He&#8217;s likely the same man mentioned in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3431\">1 Timothy 1:20<\/a><\/span> and\/or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1882\">Acts 19:33-34<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>did (v14) = showed \u2014 not just evil words but evil acts<\/h3>\n<h3>reward (v.14) \u2014 Greek indicates a statement of future fact, not a wish or desire<\/h3>\n<h3>withstood (v.15) = set oneself against<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">first defense (v.16) \u2014 by his first defense is probably to be understood his first appearance before the imperial tribunal in connection with his last trial. It may be, however, that a twofold charge was made against him, the one, of taking part in the conflagration at Rome (A.D. 64), the other, of treason, shown by hostility to the established customs of society and by weakening the Imperial authority. \u2014 Vine, page 228<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Other commentaries believe the first defense is a reference to Paul&#8217;s trail at his first imprisonment, the one that resulted in his freedom for a time.<\/h3>\n<h3>defense (v.16) = lit. &#8220;to talk oneself off from&#8221; \u2014 a Greek legal term for a verbal defense in a trial \u2014 talking &#8220;oneself off from&#8221; a charge<\/h3>\n<h3>stood (v.16) \u2014 a technical word used for one who appeared in court on behalf of the accused, an advocate<\/h3>\n<h3>stood (v.17) = stood alongside \u2014 translated &#8220;assist&#8221; in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=490\">Romans 16:2<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>that the message might be preached fully through me (v.17) \u2014 Paul, in his defense at his trial, probably preached the gospel (see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1462\">Acts 9:15-16<\/a><\/span>)<\/h3>\n<h3>preached (v.17) = a public proclamation by an official heralds<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">out of the mouth of the lion (v.17) \u2014 The expression &#8220;I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion,&#8221; is an echo of our Lord&#8217;s words in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3877\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 22:21<\/span><\/a> where He, while hanging on the Cross, prays to be delivered from the lion&#8217;s mouth, namely from death, His humiliation. <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1734\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hebrews 5:7<\/span><\/a> (Greek text) makes it clear that our Lord was not praying to be saved from death, that is, saved from dying, but, out of death, that is, saved from the grip of death, namely, to be raised out from among the dead. Paul&#8217;s humiliation in these circumstances would be his defeat at the hands of Satan when all his friends had let him down, and he would fail to proclaim the gospel from the pulpit of the then known world. \u2014 Wuest, page 170<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>deliver me from every evil work (v.18) \u2014 in the Greek, the evil is only possible here, while in verse 17, the danger is immediate<\/h3>\n<h3>deliver (v.18) = to draw oneself out of harm&#8217;s way<\/h3>\n<h3>evil work (v.18) \u2014 evil, here, is active opposition to the good \u2014 the tense of &#8220;work&#8221; indicates the subjective, an act committed by Paul himself \u2014 so, an evil deed of Paul&#8217;s own doing \u2014 failing to preach the gospel<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">heavenly kingdom (v.18) \u2014 The word &#8220;heavenly,&#8221; here, is the Greek <em>epouraneous<\/em> and refers to the &#8220;heavenly places&#8221; where, by grace, we are seated in Christ (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3693\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 2:6<\/span><\/a>) and are blessed with &#8220;all spiritual blessings&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3671\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 1:3<\/span><\/a>). Thus the &#8220;kingdom&#8221; is that in which believers today already enjoy a place positionally. The apostle refers to this in<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2040\">Colossians 1:13<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The kingdom of God&#8217;s dear Son will one day encompass the earth, where He will reign over Israel and the nations for a thousand years, but we, His heavenly people, will not reign on earth at that time. Rather we will reign over it, much as &#8220;the principalities and powers in heavenly places&#8221; do now.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Thus the believing member of the Body of Christ, even in the face of death, may triumphantly look forward to deliverance from the adversities, sorrows and temptations of this life, and preservation &#8220;unto His heavenly kingdom.&#8221; \u2014 Stam, pages 227-228<\/span><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>14\u00a0Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm.
