Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29883\" class=\"text 2Tim-4-12\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>And Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-29884\" class=\"text 2Tim-4-13\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come \u2014 and the books, especially the parchments.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>be diligent (v.9) = make haste, exert every effort, do your best \u2014 the same word translated &#8220;study&#8221; in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3542\">2 Timothy 2:15<\/a><\/span> (KJV).<\/h3>\n<h3>forsaken (v.10) = abandoned, deserted, left helpless, let down<\/h3>\n<h3>loved this present world (v.10) \u2014 not necessarily drawn away by worldly attractions, but more likely desiring the temporal life over the eternal \u2014 he may have feared for his life.<\/h3>\n<h3>Dalmatia (v.10) \u2014 Part of the province of Illyricum on the east side of the Adriatic Sea.<\/h3>\n<h3>Luke (v.11) \u2014 who was also with Paul in his first imprisonment (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2184\">Colossians 4:14<\/a><\/span>)<\/h3>\n<h3>take Mark (v.11) = lit. &#8220;pick up&#8221; \u2014 he was probably at some point along Timothy&#8217;s route from Ephesus to Rome<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Demas and Mark here stand in contrast. The latter, once cowardly (<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1529\">Acts 13:13<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #008000;\">[where John Mark is called John]), now bravely faces death; the former, once courageous (<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2184\">Colossians 4:14<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">, Philemon 1:24) now abandons the apostle. \u2014 Williams, page 965<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Mark, Barnabas&#8217; nephew, had been chosen to accompany Paul and Barnabas on Paul&#8217;s first apostolic journey, but as soon as the going had gotten hard Mark had deserted the two men and had returned to his mother at Jerusalem (<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1517\">Acts 12:12<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1529\">Acts 13:13<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">). His irresponsibility was the cause of a division between Paul and Barnabas later, when Barnabas wanted to take his nephew with them on another journey and Paul had flatly refused (<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1598\">Acts 15:36-41<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Yet is is touching, later, to find Paul writing to the Colossians: &#8220;If he [Mark] come unto you, receive him&#8221; (<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2181\">Colossians 4:10<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">), and now to find Paul asking for him. This speaks both of the apostle&#8217;s generous and forgiving nature and of a change in Mark&#8217;s life. And is it not significant that God chose Mark, the failing servant (He was an attendant, waiting on Paul and Barnabas,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1524\">Acts 13:5<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #008000;\">) to write about the perfect Servant in his Gospel According to Mark. \u2014 Stam, pages 223-224<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>and (v.12) = but \u2014 Tychicus was sent by Paul, but Crescens and Titus evidently left on their own initiative, perhaps to do ministry, but in opposition to Paul&#8217;s desire<\/h3>\n<h3>Tychicus (v.12) \u2014 Timothy was at Ephesus. Tychicus may have been sent there to carry this letter and\/or to take over for Timothy while he traveled to Rome. \u2014 see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1886\">Acts 20:4<\/a><\/span>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3798\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 6:21<\/span><\/a>; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2181\">Colossians 4:7<\/a><\/span>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3652\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Titus 3:12<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">cloak (v.13) \u2014 They are felt cloaks called <em>kepenikler<\/em>, and are impervious to wind and water. They are so stiff that the wearer can step out of them and leave them in an upright position. They are made of the tough Cilician goat&#8217;s hair with which Paul was familiar in the making of tents. Such a coat must have been a great comfort to Paul on his long journeys. Now he needed it to keep out the cold and damp of his Roman cell [winter was coming (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3586\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v.21<\/span><\/a>)]. \u2014 Wuest, page 166<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>books (v.13) \u2014 scrolls made from papyrus<\/h3>\n<h3>parchments (v.13) \u2014 scrolls made from animal skins \u2014 these may have been Scripture, which was usually written on better, longer-lasting scrolls<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>9\u00a0Be diligent to come to me quickly; 10\u00a0for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica \u2014 Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. 11\u00a0Only Luke is with me.
