{"id":3532,"date":"2014-12-23T08:52:34","date_gmt":"2014-12-23T14:52:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3532"},"modified":"2023-04-15T08:34:48","modified_gmt":"2023-04-15T14:34:48","slug":"2-timothy-23-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3532","title":{"rendered":"2 Timothy 2:3-7"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6 The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7 Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>endure hardship (v.3) = in Greek, it&#8217;s &#8220;endure hardship together with someone else&#8221; \u2014 the same word is translated &#8220;share with me in the sufferings&#8221; in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3523\">2 Timothy 1:8<\/a><\/span>.<\/h3>\n<h3>good (v.3) = <em>kalos<\/em> = noble<\/h3>\n<h3>Jesus Christ (v.3) \u2014 should be &#8220;Christ Jesus&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>engaged in warfare (v.4) = be on active service<\/h3>\n<h3>entangles (v.4) = be involved in, inweaved<\/h3>\n<h3>affairs (v.4) = the doing of any affair, business, occupation \u2014 pursuits and occupations pertaining to civil life<\/h3>\n<h3>please (v.4) = be of use to<\/h3>\n<h3>competes in athletics (v.5) = contend in the Greek games \u2014 from the word from which we get &#8220;athlete&#8221; \u2014 To qualify, an athlete had to show a certificate of Greek birth, undergo a strict, prescribed course of training and conform to precise rules of play.<\/h3>\n<h3>hardworking (v.6) = grow weary, exhausted, toil \u2014 emphasized in the Greek \u2014 &#8220;it is the farmer that labors that must be first&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>farmer (v.6) = tiller of the soil<\/h3>\n<h3>must (v.6) = it is necessary in the nature of the case<\/h3>\n<h3>consider (v.7) = understand, think upon, ponder<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The three illustrations are taken from everyday life and each is indicative of patient, self-sacrificing and enduring toil. There are three respective incentives. The first is that of pleasing the Lord. The second is the obtaining of the reward in the day to come. The third is that of partaking of the fruits of labor. \u2014 Vine, page 212.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>From the soldier, single-minded dedication to the task. From the athlete, conformity to the rules.
