{"id":3521,"date":"2014-12-17T09:43:43","date_gmt":"2014-12-17T15:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3521"},"modified":"2023-04-13T13:00:17","modified_gmt":"2023-04-13T19:00:17","slug":"2-timothy-16-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3521","title":{"rendered":"2 Timothy 1:6-7"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>therefore (v.6) \u2014 because of Timothy&#8217;s faith<\/h3>\n<h3>stir up (v.6) = keep in full flame, kindle afresh \u2014 It&#8217;s in the present tense, so &#8220;keep stirring up&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>gift (v.6) = Greek <em>charisma<\/em> = gift of grace. The gift here refers to Timothy&#8217;s ability to meet the challenges of the ministry with love and self-control and without fear.<\/h3>\n<h3>laying on of my hands (v.6) \u2014 Paul had been divinely directed to Timothy (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3431\">1 Timothy 1:18<\/a><\/span>). Paul&#8217;s &#8220;laying on of hands&#8221; had imparted God&#8217;s gift of ministry. That of the elders indicated acknowledgement and identification (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3469\">1 Timothy 4:14 where see note<\/a><\/span>).<\/h3>\n<h3>spirit (v.7) \u2014 moral qualities and activities. Here, the spirit is of power and love and a sound mind, referring to the gift (v.6).<\/h3>\n<h3>fear (v.7) = fearfulness, timidity<\/h3>\n<h3>power (v.7) \u2014 the ability to meet the challenges of the ministry<\/h3>\n<h3>love (v.7) = <em>agape<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>sound mind (v.7) = discipline, self-control<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">With the apostasy raging about him, it would have been most natural for Timothy to become discouraged. He was not aggressive and his opponents were; thus there was a strong possibility that they might gradually silence him by causing him, in his modesty, to give way before them, in their belligerence.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t let this happen,&#8221; says Paul. &#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Stir up the gift which is in thee<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8221; (v.6). The Greek for &#8220;stir up&#8221; actually means to &#8220;kindle up,&#8221; to stir and fan into flame. Paul would have Timothy re-awaken the burning fire which had been kindled upon the altar of his soul.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Years before, Timothy had received his pastoral gift by the laying on of Paul&#8217;s hands. It was this contact with the great apostle and other devoted men of God (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3469\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 4:14<\/span><\/a>), that the Holy Spirit had used to instill into him a deep desire and confidence to teach the Word.
