{"id":3514,"date":"2014-12-12T10:06:57","date_gmt":"2014-12-12T16:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3514"},"modified":"2023-04-12T13:37:38","modified_gmt":"2023-04-12T19:37:38","slug":"2-timothy-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3514","title":{"rendered":"2 Timothy 1:1-2"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"chapter-1\"><em><span class=\"text 2Tim-1-1\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-29812\" class=\"text 2Tim-1-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>To Timothy, a beloved son: <\/span><span class=\"text 2Tim-1-2\">Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Jesus Christ (v.1) \u2014 the order of the names points to Him as one who was on earth but was then exalted; rejected of men and then glorified; a testimony to His resurrection<\/h3>\n<h3>by the will of God (v.1) \u2014 Paul was an active enemy of Jesus Christ when God chose him to be an apostle (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3424\">1 Timothy 1:12-13<\/a><\/span>)<\/h3>\n<h3>will (v.1) = <em>thelema, <\/em>a desire that comes from the emotional nature \u2014 as opposed to <em>boule<\/em>, a desire that comes from a rational process<\/h3>\n<h3>promise of life (v.1) \u2014 with the promise goes the provision for its proclamation, which is the purpose of Paul&#8217;s ministry \u2014 a promise of God to Himself (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3523\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v.9<\/span><\/a>) \u2014 <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I<span id=\"en-NKJV-29895\" class=\"text Titus-1-2\">n hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-29896\" class=\"text Titus-1-3\">but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior<\/span> (Titus 1:2-3).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Christ Jesus (v.1) \u2014 the order of the names points to Him as one who was in glory with the Father and them emptied Himself and endured suffering and death; a testimony to His pre-existence<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The apostle&#8217;s reference to &#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8221; is dealt with more fully in Titus 1, though Timothy doubtless understood it. In <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3597\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Titus 1:2<\/span><\/a> he declares that this promise of &#8220;eternal life&#8221; was made by &#8220;God, who cannot lie&#8221; and that He made this promise &#8220;before the world began.&#8221; Clearly, He made this promise to Himself, and this is the &#8220;eternal purpose&#8221; of which the apostle has so much to say. This promise of life was, of course, vested &#8220;in Christ Jesus,&#8221; who was to pay the death penalty for all so that eternal life might be offered to all by grace. Thus in the <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3523\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">9th verse<\/span><\/a> of this very chapter we read that:<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;[God] hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and [His own] grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It is significant that in both passages the apostle declares that it was given specifically to him to proclaim this glad news.
