{"id":3495,"date":"2014-11-26T10:22:08","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T16:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3495"},"modified":"2023-04-08T04:53:10","modified_gmt":"2023-04-08T10:53:10","slug":"1-timothy-611-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3495","title":{"rendered":"1 Timothy 6:11-12"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>but you (v.11) = but as for you in contradistinction to others<\/h3>\n<h3>flee (v.11) \u2014 tense indicates continuous action \u2014 be constantly fleeing<\/h3>\n<h3>these things (v.11) \u2014 the love of money and all it brings<\/h3>\n<h3>pursue (v.11) = run after swiftly, endeavor to acquire \u2014 tense indicates continuous action \u2014 be constantly eagerly seeking<\/h3>\n<h3>righteousness (v.11) \u2014 here, moral rectitude<\/h3>\n<h3>love (v.11) = <em>agape<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>patience (v.11) = lit. &#8220;abiding under&#8221; \u2014 endurance under trials, steadfastness<\/h3>\n<h3>gentleness (v.11) \u2014 having a meek disposition, gentleness of spirit<\/h3>\n<h3>fight (v.12) = contend for a prize \u2014\u00a0 tense indicates continuous action \u2014 be constantly fighting<\/h3>\n<h3>of faith (v.12) = &#8220;of THE faith&#8221; \u2014 a particular body of doctrine \u2014 Paul was exhorting Timothy to fight for his doctrine<\/h3>\n<h3>lay hold (v.12) = seize upon, take possession of \u2014 tense indicates a definite, decisive act<\/h3>\n<h3>lay hold of eternal life (v.12) \u2014 Timothy was saved and already had eternal life. Paul was telling him to experience it more in his life now, to live in light of his eternal life \u2014\u00a0 &#8220;Life&#8221; has a definite article before it \u2014 a particular life.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Does this not imply that one who does not get into the battle for truth has failed to &#8220;<em>lay hold on eternal life<\/em>,&#8221; to really get out of his life in Christ what it has for him? Paul surely sought to &#8220;lay hold&#8221; on that for which Christ had &#8220;laid hold&#8221; on him. (In <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1196\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Philippians 3:12<\/span><\/a> this term &#8220;lay hold&#8221; is rendered &#8220;apprehend.&#8221;) To the Ephesians themselves, Paul had but recently written: &#8220;.<em>.. be strong in the Lord &#8230; Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3793\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 6:10-11<\/span><\/a>). And, putting &#8220;<em>the Sword of the Spirit<\/em>&#8221; in one hand and &#8220;<em>the shield of faith<\/em>&#8221; in the other, he challenges them four times to &#8220;<em>stand &#8230; withstand &#8230; stand &#8230; stand<\/em>!&#8221; And by God&#8217;s grace we can: &#8220;<em>For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal<\/em> [physical]<em> but<\/em> [they are] <em>mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5098\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 10:4<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Thus in these letters to Timothy the apostle&#8217;s charge is: &#8220;<em>War a good warfare &#8230; Fight the good fight of the faith &#8230; Endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3431\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 1:18<\/span><\/a>; 6:12; and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3532\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Timothy 2:3<\/span><\/a>). And at the close of his own mighty ministry he himself could say: &#8220;<em>I have fought a good fight<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3571\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Timothy 4:7<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Stam, page 137.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>good (v.12) = excellent, noble \u2014 good as seen from the outside by another observer<\/h3>\n<h3>confession (v.12) = lit. &#8220;to say the same&#8221; \u2014 agree with what someone else says \u2014 In this case, Timothy&#8217;s agreement with Paul&#8217;s teaching.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Wuest&#8217;s translation \u2014 Be constantly engaging in the contest of the Faith, which contest is marked by its beauty of technique.
