From such withdraw yourself.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>if (v.3) = &#8220;if, as the case is&#8221; \u2014 a fulfilled condition \u2014 the &#8220;otherwise&#8221; teaching was occurring<\/h3>\n<h3>teaches otherwise (v.3) \u2014 other than the teaching mentioned in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3488\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v.2<\/span><\/a><\/span> \u2014 see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3418\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 1:3<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>consent (v.3) = to come to, draw near, give one&#8217;s assent to<\/h3>\n<h3>wholesome (v.3) = from which we get &#8220;hygiene,&#8221; &#8220;healthy&#8221; \u2014 free from error<\/h3>\n<h3>the words of our Lord Jesus Christ (v.3) \u2014 as given to Paul<\/h3>\n<h3>godliness (v.3) = lit. &#8220;well-devoutness&#8221; \u2014 well-pleasing piety \u2014 the doctrine that concerns the proper attitude toward God<\/h3>\n<h3>proud (v.4) = lit. &#8220;wrapped in smoke&#8221; \u2014 blinded \u2014 the same word as &#8220;puffed up&#8221; in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3448\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 3:6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u2014 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Tense indicates an action completed in the past having finished results in the present \u2014 pride has finished its work<\/h3>\n<h3>knowing (v.4) = understanding \u2014 devoid of facts and unable to do reflective thinking<\/h3>\n<h3>nothing (v.4) = lit. &#8220;not even one thing&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>obsessed (v.4) = sick, diseased, unsound, morbidly occupied with something \u2014 as opposed to &#8220;wholesome&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>disputes (v.4) = laborious inquiry, quarrels about words \u2014 as in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3418\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 1:4<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>envy (v.4) = discontent with another&#8217;s superiority or advantage \u2014 seeking to deprive another of what he has<\/h3>\n<h3>strife (v.4) = the expression of enmity<\/h3>\n<h3>reviling (v.4) = blasphemy, but also, as here, scornful and insulting speech<\/h3>\n<h3>evil suspicions (v.4) = lit. &#8220;underthinking&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>useless (v.5) = rubbing against, friction<\/h3>\n<h3>useless wranglings (v.5) = mutual irritations, constant strife<\/h3>\n<h3>men of corrupt minds (v.5) = lit. &#8220;men corrupted in mind&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>destitute (v.5) = bereft, defrauded, despoiled \u2014 the sense being that these men once had the truth but have defected from it<\/h3>\n<h3>godliness is a means of gain (v.5) \u2014 that godliness is the way to or source of gain \u2014 This false teaching may have been particularly attractive to the slaves in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3488\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">vs. 1-2<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/h3>\n<h3>from such withdraw yourself (v.5) \u2014 not in the best manuscripts<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Wuest&#8217;s translation \u2014 If, as is the case, anyone is teaching things of a different nature and opposed to the things just mentioned, and does not give his assent to wholesome words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the teaching which is according to a godly piety, he is in a beclouded and stupid state of mind, which condition is caused by pride, not doing any concentrated or reflective thinking in even one instance, but exercising a morbid curiosity about inquiries and quarrels about words, from which come envy, strife, speech injurious to another&#8217;s good name, malicious suspicions, protracted and wearing discussions of men corrupted in mind, who have disinherited themselves of the truth, thinking that godly piety is a way of gain. \u2014 Wuest, page 93.<\/span><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and &hellip;
