{"id":3485,"date":"2014-11-15T08:33:46","date_gmt":"2014-11-15T14:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3485"},"modified":"2023-04-05T06:43:39","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T12:43:39","slug":"1-timothy-522-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3485","title":{"rendered":"1 Timothy 5:22-25"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">22 Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people\u2019s sins; keep yourself pure.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach\u2019s sake and your frequent infirmities.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">24 Some men\u2019s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">25 Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Lay hands (v.22) \u2014 signifying fellowship<\/h3>\n<h3>keep (v.22) = exercise watchful care<\/h3>\n<h3>pure (v.22) = upright, honorable<\/h3>\n<h3>Some commentaries state that verse 22 is a warning against restoring a sinning member to fellowship too soon. I think it makes more sense in context as a warning against giving a person a position of leadership in the church before knowing him well. If you do, and he turns out to be involved in some habitual sin, you are responsible for his sins in light of church leadership.<\/h3>\n<h3>no longer drink only water (v.23) = &#8220;Be no longer a drinker of water&#8221; \u2014 don&#8217;t entirely abstain from alcohol<\/h3>\n<h3>Some commentaries think verse 23 is completely parenthetical \u2014 that Paul was concerned for Timothy because of the stress he was under. Some think it might refer back to &#8220;keep yourself pure&#8221; in verse 22 \u2014 a warning against partaking in the sin of asceticism.<\/h3>\n<h3>clearly evident (v.24 and 25) = manifested before, public<\/h3>\n<h3>preceding (v.24) = leading forth<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The meaning here is that these open sins go before their perpetrator to the judgment-seat like heralds, proclaiming their sentence in advance. <em>Krisin<\/em> (judgment) is not specifically the judgment of men or the final judgment of God, or the sentence of an ecclesiastical court \u2014 but is used indefinitely. The writer would say, no judicial utterance is necessary to condemn them of these sins.
