{"id":3483,"date":"2014-11-14T09:18:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T15:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3483"},"modified":"2023-04-05T06:41:56","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T12:41:56","slug":"1-timothy-517-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3483","title":{"rendered":"1 Timothy 5:17-21"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>For the Scripture says, \u201cYou shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,\u201dand, \u201cThe laborer is worthy of his wages.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>elders (v.17) \u2014 same as &#8220;bishops&#8221; in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3448\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 3:1-7<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>rule (v.17) = lit. &#8220;stand before&#8221; \u2014 lead, be over \u2014 with the sense of &#8220;maintaining&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>honor (v.17) \u2014 financial support<\/h3>\n<h3>labor (v.17) = grow weary, toil, exhausted, tired<\/h3>\n<h3>doctrine (v.17) \u2014 teaching \u2014 those elders who study the Word and teach it<\/h3>\n<h3>You shall not muzzle an ox &#8230; (v.18) \u2014 from Deuteronomy 25:4 (see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2321\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 9:9<\/span><\/a><\/span>)<\/h3>\n<h3>The laborer is worthy &#8230; (v.18) \u2014 from Luke 10:7 (Luke was a frequent companion of Paul.)<\/h3>\n<h3>accusation against an elder (v.19) = a formal accusation before a tribunal \u2014 because of their position, elders are likely to receive accusations from those who don&#8217;t like their teaching (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3600\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Titus 1:9<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>from (v.19) = upon \u2014 upon the authority of<\/h3>\n<h3>two or three witnesses (v.19) \u2014 from Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15<\/h3>\n<h3>sinning (v.20) \u2014 tense indicates persistent sin<\/h3>\n<h3>rebuke (v.20) = a reproof that is likely to result in conviction<\/h3>\n<h3>before all (v.20) = before the rest \u2014 the other elders<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">God and the Lord Jesus Christ (v.21) \u2014 The words &#8220;God&#8221; and &#8220;Lord Jesus Christ&#8221; are in a construction which is called Granville Sharp&#8217;s rule which makes the words &#8220;God&#8221; and &#8220;Lord Jesus Christ&#8221; refer to the same individual. It is &#8220;our God, even Christ Jesus.&#8221; &#8220;Lord&#8221; is not in the text. &#8220;Our&#8221; is from the article before &#8220;God.&#8221; The expression is polemic [a strong verbal attack against], the apostle having in mind the institution of emperor worship, the state religion of the Roman Empire, in which the emperor was worshiped as a deity.
