{"id":3445,"date":"2014-09-19T09:23:23","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T15:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3445"},"modified":"2023-03-29T09:50:11","modified_gmt":"2023-03-29T15:50:11","slug":"1-timothy-28-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3445","title":{"rendered":"1 Timothy 2:8-15"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>therefore (v.8) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3439\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Verses 3-7<\/span><\/a> were a parenthesis. Paul is now returning to the subject of the assembly begun in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3437\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verses 1-2<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>desire (v.8) = deliberate purpose, proceeding from reason<\/h3>\n<h3>the men (v.8) \u2014 in contrast to women \u2014 not &#8220;mankind&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>men pray (v.8) \u2014 public prayer, in the assembly<\/h3>\n<h3>everywhere (v.8) = in every place \u2014 wherever the assembly meets<\/h3>\n<h3>holy (v.8) = righteous, gracious (Greek <em>hosios<\/em>)<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Unkindness, anger and suspicion should have no place in our prayers to God, for we ourselves have failed Him again and again. We are not to pray &#8220;at&#8221; others, but are to pray to\u00a0 God for and with them. \u2014 Stam, page 63<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>lifting up holy hands (v.8) \u2014 common in Israel (1 Kings 8:22; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3918\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 28:2<\/span><\/a>, Isaiah 1:15) and in the early church<\/h3>\n<h3>doubting (v.8) = disputing, skeptical questioning, criticism<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">adorn (v.9) = The word &#8220;adorn&#8221; is <em>kosmeo<\/em>. The noun is <em>kosmos<\/em>, the basic meaning of which is &#8220;an ordered system,&#8221; an apt and harmonious arrangement or constitution, &#8220;ornament, decoration, adornment.&#8221; The verb <em>kosmeo<\/em> means &#8220;to put in order, arrange, make ready.&#8221; The word <em>kosmos<\/em> (order), is opposed to <em>chaos<\/em> (our &#8220;chaos&#8221;).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">By the use of this word, Paul indicates that the adornment of the Christian woman should be one in which order, not disorder, obtains. And this orderliness must not extend merely to the relationship of the various articles of wearing apparel to one another, but also to the relationship of that apparel to her Christian character and testimony. In other words, the apparel must be congruous with, fitting to, and consistent with what she is, a child of God. The word &#8220;modest&#8221; is the translation of <em>kosmios<\/em> &#8220;well arranged, seemly, modest.&#8221; The word &#8220;apparel&#8221; here is <em>katastole<\/em>, which coveys the idea of external appearance, principally in dress. It is deportment, as exhibited externally, whether in look, manner, or dress. \u2014 Wuest, pages 45-46.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>in like manner (v.9) \u2014 referring back to the fact of Paul&#8217;s desire<\/h3>\n<h3>propriety (v.9) = the Greek word indicates a mix of modesty and humility, repugnance of the unseemly<\/h3>\n<h3>moderation (v.9) = sound judgment, self control<\/h3>\n<h3>professing (v.10) = proclaiming<\/h3>\n<h3>godliness (v.10) = devoutness, piety, but with an emphasis on &#8220;God&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>good (v.10) = beneficial<\/h3>\n<h3>do not permit a woman to teach (v.12) = lit. &#8220;be a teacher&#8221; with authority \u2014 in the assembly (see <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2457\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 14:34-35<\/span><\/a>). See <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3517\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Timothy 1:5<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3562\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3:15<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3633\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Titus 2:3-4<\/span><\/a> for occasions where women are to teach.<\/h3>\n<h3>have authority (v.12) \u2014 exercise authority, govern<\/h3>\n<h3>silence (v.12) = quietness<\/h3>\n<h3>formed (v.13) = molded \u2014 used only of soft substances, like clay or wax<\/h3>\n<h3>Adam was formed first (v.13) \u2014 assumption of, and evidence for, the truth and literal interpretation of Genesis 1-3<\/h3>\n<h3>not deceived (v.14) \u2014 His sin was conscious.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In addition to the order in their creation: first Adam, then Eve, the apostle points out that it was not Adam but the woman who was deceived in Eden. He disobeyed with this eyes wide open, evidently through love for his wife. Satan knew the difference in their natures thus he approached Adam, not directly, but through his wife.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">These facts, of course, place the greater blame on Adam, thus we read in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=314\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 5:12<\/span><\/a> that &#8220;by one man [not by one couple] sin entered into the world.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It is on the facts that God first created Adam, then Eve as an &#8220;help meet for him,&#8221; and that Eve was the more susceptible to deception, that Paul bases his argument for the relationship of the woman to the man.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The former of these two arguments is expanded in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2391\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 11:8-9<\/span><\/a>: For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man, neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man (Cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4506\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 2:18<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Stam, pages 66-67<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>deceived (v.14, first use) = deceived (second use) = thoroughly deceived<\/h3>\n<h3>the woman (v.14) \u2014 Eve as a type of all women<\/h3>\n<h3>fell into transgression (v.14) \u2014 the tense indicates the permanent effects resulting from a definite point in time<\/h3>\n<h3>transgression (v.14) = lit. &#8220;stepping across&#8221; \u2014 breach of law<\/h3>\n<h3>saved (v.15) \u2014 most likely, this means &#8220;saved from the social evils that tempt by fulfilling the role given her by God&#8217;s design&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It seems that the apostle, in the light of the context, teaches here that in motherhood, i.e., in taking her place in the home, living with her husband in faith, love and holiness, with sobriety, the Christian woman will be saved from the pitfalls that have wrecked the lives of so many women. We believe that the word &#8220;saved&#8221; here, is used in its broader sense, as in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3469\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 4:16<\/span><\/a>: Take heed to thyself and to the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee.&#8221; \u2014 Stam, page 68.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">So Paul, taking the common-sense view that childbearing, rather than public teaching or the direction of affairs, is woman&#8217;s primary function, duty, privilege, and dignity, reminds Timothy and his readers that there was another aspect of the story in Genesis besides that of the woman&#8217;s taking the initiative in transgression: the pains of childbirth were her sentence, yet in undergoing these, she finds her salvation. She shall be saved in her childbearing.
