{"id":3441,"date":"2014-09-13T09:11:12","date_gmt":"2014-09-13T15:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3441"},"modified":"2023-03-28T09:56:42","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T15:56:42","slug":"1-timothy-23-4-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3441","title":{"rendered":"1 Timothy 2:5-6"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">one God (v.5) \u2014 This is not a statement of the existence of one God in contrast to the plurality of the gods of the heathen, as in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3426\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1:17<\/span><\/a>, but is designed to lay stress upon the oneness of the relations of God to man. There is not one God for the Jew exclusively.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">That&#8217;s the point of the connection with the preceding verses, with the injunction that prayer is to be made for all men, and that God &#8220;willeth that all men should be saved.&#8221; The same truth is enforced in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=288\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 3:29-30<\/span><\/a>. There the apostle points out that faith is not a national quality and that God is not merely a national God, that &#8220;God is one,&#8221; i.e., for both Jew and Gentle. There the condition of justification is stressed; here the fact of salvation. In each place the stress on the &#8220;one,&#8221; marked by its position at the beginning of the sentence, has this force. \u2014 Vine, page 158<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Mediator (v.5) \u2014 acts between two parties with a view to procuring peace.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;man&#8221; explains how Christ Jesus could be a mediator. He can only be an adequate mediator whose sympathy with, and understanding of both parties is cognizable by and patent to both.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;mediator&#8221; is <em>mesites<\/em>, &#8220;one who intervenes between two, either in order to make or restore peace and friendship, or to form a compact or ratify a covenant.&#8221; Our Lord is a mediator in that He interposed Himself by His death, and made possible the restoration of the harmony between God and man which had been broken by sin. \u2014 Wuest, page41<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Man (v.5) \u2014 emphasized in the original to point out the Lord&#8217;s humanity and His deity \u2014 &#8220;Himself Man&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>Christ Jesus (v.5) \u2014 to emphasize His deity, God who stooped to become man<\/h3>\n<h3>gave (v.6) \u2014 a voluntary act<\/h3>\n<h3>ransom (v.6) = Greek <em>antilutron<\/em> \u2014 corresponding to a ransom, equivalent in value to that which is procured by it, a payment given instead of (a slave or prisoner), in substitution for<\/h3>\n<h3>for (v.6) = on behalf of<\/h3>\n<h3>So &#8220;ransom for&#8221; refers to payment for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and<\/span> on behalf of &#8230;<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;for&#8221; translates <em>huper<\/em>, which means &#8220;on behalf of.&#8221; In <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3178\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 20:28<\/span><\/a> and Mark 10:45 the preposition is <em>anti<\/em>, which is of substitutionary significance, and there the accompanying phrase is &#8220;for many.&#8221; Christ died on behalf of all men; the validity of His sacrifice is universal; but not all men avail themselves of the benefit.
