For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-28089\" class=\"text Rom-6-20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>human terms (v.19) \u2014 Paul uses the slave analogy so the Romans will understand. Slavery was common throughout the Roman empire.<\/h3>\n<h3>weakness (v.19) \u2014\u00a0 due to the Romans&#8217; iniquity, there was a good chance they wouldn&#8217;t understand Paul&#8217;s point about the need to switch masters. Christianity isn&#8217;t slavery, but Paul uses the term so they would understand.<\/h3>\n<h3>flesh (v.19) = weakness of human nature<\/h3>\n<h3>lawlessness (v.19) \u2014 disregard and breach of the Law of God. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 John 3:4 \u2014 <em>Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Uncleanness (impurity) defiles the person, iniquity violates God&#8217;s law.<\/h3>\n<h3>more lawlessness (v.19)\u00a0 \u2014 the effect of lawlessness<\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\">righteousness (v.19) = sanctification<\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Sanctification (<em>hagiasmos<\/em>) signifies (1) separation to God, as in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2208\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 1:30<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6182\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Thessalonians 2:13<\/span><\/a>; 1 Peter 1:2; (2) the course of life which benefits those who have been separated to God. This is its meaning here and in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=342\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 22<\/span><\/a>. Sanctification is a state which God has predetermined for believers, and is the state into which in grace He calls them and in which they begin their course as believers. On this account they are called saints, <em>hagioi<\/em>, &#8220;sanctified ones.&#8221; Whereas formerly their behavior bore witness to their standing in the world in separation from God, now their behavior should bear witness to their standing before God in separation from the world.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">As there are no degrees of justification, so there are no degrees of sanctification; a thing is set apart for God, or it is not, there is no middle course; a person in either in Christ Jesus, justified and sanctified, or he is out of Christ, in his sins and alienated from God. But while there are no degrees of sanctification, it is evident there can and should be progress therein; hence the believer is urged to &#8220;follow after &#8230; sanctification&#8221; \u2014 Vine, pg. 95-96.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\">free from righteousness \u2014 no relation of any sort to it<\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Sanctification is not sinlessness; it is to be set apart as sacred to God.
