1 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

3 His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

4 And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

5 But the angel answered and said to the women, \u201cDo not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

8 So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

9 And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, \u201cRejoice!\u201d So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

10 Then Jesus said to them, \u201cDo not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

The resurrection also appears in Mark 16:1-20<\/span><\/a>; Luke 24:1-12 and John 20:1-31<\/span><\/a>. Each writer gives different details depending on the purpose of the book. Matthew’s is the shortest account.<\/h3>\n

after the Sabbath (v.1) \u2014 the night of Saturday night and Sunday morning after the sabbath ended at sundown on Saturday<\/h3>\n

rolled back the stone (v.2) \u2014 to reveal the empty tomb. Jesus was already risen and gone.<\/h3>\n

Rejoice (v.9) \u2014 one commentary said that the Hebrew word used here was the ordinary greeting when meeting a friend.<\/h3>\n

The resurrection is attributed to the Father (Hebrews 13:20<\/span><\/a>); the Son (John 2:19-21<\/span><\/a>; 10:17-18<\/span><\/a>) and the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11<\/span><\/a>).<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
