{"id":3348,"date":"2014-07-27T07:12:37","date_gmt":"2014-07-27T13:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3348"},"modified":"2025-07-16T05:52:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T11:52:59","slug":"matthew-2715-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3348","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 27:15-26"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">16 And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">17 Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, \u201cWhom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, \u201cHave nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">21 The governor answered and said to them, \u201cWhich of the two do you want me to release to you?\u201d They said, \u201cBarabbas!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">22 Pilate said to them, \u201cWhat then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?\u201d They all said to him, \u201cLet Him be crucified!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">23 Then the governor said, \u201cWhy, what evil has He done?\u201d But they cried out all the more, saying, \u201cLet Him be crucified!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, \u201cI am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">25 And all the people answered and said, \u201cHis blood be on us and on our children.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Barabbas (v.16) = son of Abba, son of the father \u2014 We know from <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9154\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 15:7<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=909\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 18:40<\/span><\/a> that Barabbas was a thief and a murderer who had been involved in a rebellion of some sort. A few manuscripts give him the name &#8220;Jesus Barabbas.&#8221; It&#8217;s possible he had portrayed himself as the messiah.<\/h3>\n<h3>envy (v.18) \u2014 Pilate knew the priests were jealous of Jesus because of His popularity with the people, so he appealed to the people to have Him released.
