And a servant girl came to him, saying, \u201cYou also were with Jesus of Galilee.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>70\u00a0<\/sup>But he denied it before them all, saying, \u201cI do not know what you are saying.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>71\u00a0<\/sup>And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, \u201cThis fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>72\u00a0<\/sup>But again he denied with an oath, \u201cI do not know the Man!\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>73\u00a0<\/sup>And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, \u201cSurely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>74\u00a0<\/sup>Then he began to curse and swear, saying, \u201cI do not know the Man!\u201d Immediately a rooster crowed.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>75\u00a0<\/sup>And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, \u201cBefore the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.\u201d So he went out and wept bitterly.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>This account also appears in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9145\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 14:66-72<\/span><\/a>; Luke 22:54-62; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=901\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 18:15-18<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=905\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">25-27<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>courtyard (v.69) \u2014 in the palace courtyard. The trials before Annas and Caiaphas were in the buildings that surrounded it.<\/h3>\n<h3>gateway (v.71) \u2014 the passageway from the courtyard into the street<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The palace or court of the high priest no doubt was constructed in the usual way. A gated porch admitted to a central courtyard on one side of which was the palace of Annas, and on the other side the palace of Caiaphas. Opposite the porch a raised columned pavement formed an audience chamber. Here Christ would stand as a prisoner before the high priest, and thus Peter was enabled to see Him and He to see Peter (Luke 22:1). \u2014 Williams, page 727.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>your speech betrays you (v.73) \u2014 his Galilean accent<\/h3>\n<h3>curse and swear (v.74) \u2014 perhaps profanity, or maybe calling down death upon himself if he were lying<\/h3>\n<h3>Peter remembered (v.75) \u2014 The Lord turned (from where He was on the balcony) and looked at Peter (Luke 22:61).<\/h3>\n<h3>The Lord&#8217;s look was probably not one of judgment but of sadness and love. When He warned Peter of his denials, He told him:<\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cSimon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren&#8221; (Luke 22:31-32).<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Peter failed, but his faith did not.
