20\u00a0Then the mother of Zebedee\u2019s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

21\u00a0And He said to her,\u00a0\u201cWhat do you wish?\u201d\u00a0She said to Him, \u201cGrant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

22\u00a0But Jesus answered and said,\u00a0\u201cYou do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?\u201d\u00a0They said to Him, \u201cWe are able.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

23\u00a0So He said to them,\u00a0\u201cYou will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with;\u00a0but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but\u00a0it is for those\u00a0for whom it is prepared by My Father.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

24\u00a0And when the ten heard\u00a0it,\u00a0they were greatly displeased with the two brothers.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

mother (v.20) \u2014 Mark 10:35<\/span><\/a> makes it clear that it was really James and John who were asking. They just used their mother, probably to gain sympathy.<\/h3>\n

sons (v.20) \u2014 James and John (Matthew 4:21<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n

grant (v.21) = lit. “command”<\/h3>\n

The disciples believed He was the Messiah who would reign. They had faith. But they didn’t understand that He would first have to suffer.<\/h3>\n

right hand (v.21) \u2014 The position next to His throne. They’d been told they would sit on twelve thrones (Matthew 19:28<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n

cup (v.22) \u2014 His suffering and death<\/h3>\n

The mention of baptism (vs.22-23) are not in the original manuscript of Matthew. They were copied from the parallel account in Mark 10:35-41<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n

you will indeed drink (v.23) \u2014 James was beheaded (Acts 12:2<\/span><\/a>) and John was exiled to Patmos (Revelation 1:9)<\/h3>\n

it is for those (v.23) \u2014 these words were added by the translators. He wasn’t saying that He couldn’t give the positions, but that He could only give them to those for whom it was prepared.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
