{"id":3169,"date":"2014-03-02T17:53:37","date_gmt":"2014-03-02T23:53:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3169"},"modified":"2025-07-02T06:47:56","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T12:47:56","slug":"matthew-201-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3169","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 20:1-16"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 \u201cFor the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2\u00a0Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3\u00a0And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4\u00a0and said to them, \u2018You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.\u2019 So they went.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5\u00a0Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6\u00a0And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle,\u00a0and said to them, \u2018Why have you been standing here idle all day?\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7\u00a0They said to him, \u2018Because no one hired us.\u2019 He said to them, \u2018You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right you will receive.\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8\u00a0\u201cSo when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, \u2018Call the laborers and give them\u00a0their\u00a0wages, beginning with the last to the first.\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9\u00a0And when those came who\u00a0were hired\u00a0about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10\u00a0But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11\u00a0And when they had received\u00a0it,\u00a0they complained against the landowner,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12\u00a0saying, \u2018These last\u00a0men\u00a0have worked\u00a0only\u00a0one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">13\u00a0But he answered one of them and said, \u2018Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">14\u00a0Take\u00a0what is\u00a0yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man\u00a0the same\u00a0as to you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">15\u00a0Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">16\u00a0So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3167\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 19:30<\/span><\/a> and 20:16 bookend the parable with the principle that the last will be first and first last. The parable itself explains what this means \u2014 that God will reward based on His own criteria and not based on those we think He should use.<\/h3>\n<h3>evil (v.15) \u2014 envious<\/h3>\n<h3>Christ now proceeded to teach, through a parable, the basis on which rewards will be apportioned in the millennial kingdom.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">We would have to acknowledge that he [the householder] was both fair and gracious. He had a right to do what he had so graciously done. By this parable the Lord desired those who had asked what they would receive to learn the lesson that they were to work in the vineyard and leave their reward to Him. He would be just and fair, and He could also be counted on to be gracious. He had a right to do as He chose in dispensing the rewards. Their responsibility was to labor faithfully for Him, not with a view to the reward, but to please the One who had sent them to labor in the vineyard.
