{"id":3132,"date":"2014-01-28T10:00:37","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T16:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3132"},"modified":"2025-06-28T06:46:30","modified_gmt":"2025-06-28T12:46:30","slug":"matthew-1714-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3132","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 17:14-21"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">14\u00a0And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">15\u00a0\u201cLord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic\u00a0and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">16\u00a0So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">17\u00a0Then Jesus answered and said,\u00a0\u201cO faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">18\u00a0And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19\u00a0Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, \u201cWhy could we not cast it out?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">20\u00a0So Jesus said to them,\u00a0\u201cBecause of your unbelief;\u00a0for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, \u2018Move from here to there,\u2019 and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">21\u00a0However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>epileptic (v.15) = the Greek word means &#8220;lunatic&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>disciples (v.16) \u2014 the nine not on the mountain with Jesus<\/h3>\n<h3>The disciples had been given authority to cast out demons in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2830\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 10:8<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Christ responded &#8220;O unbelieving generation&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9013\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 9:19<\/span><\/a>). He addressed this to the father and to the crowd and to the teachers of the law rather than to the disciples who had been unable to heal the man. This son evidently had been brought as a test of the authority that belonged to Christ and as a test of the disciples as His representatives. The nation to whom Christ had refused to give a sign was still seeking a sign. They would not believe until they had been convinced to their satisfaction that Jesus was who He claimed to be. This confrontation was designed to provide some additional proof by which they might be persuaded; hence, Christ referred to that group as an unbelieving generation, for they had seen a multitude of signs previously and had not believed. \u2014 Pentecost, page 260.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">What Christ did for the demon-possessed boy was a revelation of what He could and would do for the nation Israel if they would put faith in Him. If they would turn to Him and seek deliverance, He would grant deliverance in response to their faith. Their deliverance did not depend on His ability to deliver but rather on their faith in His person. \u2014 Pentecost, page 261.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>unbelief (v.20) = little faith<\/h3>\n<h3>Verse 21 isn&#8217;t in the best manuscripts. This account is also found in Luke 9:37-43 and <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9013\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 9:14-29<\/span><\/a>. Verse 21 may have been brought over from <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=9013\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 9:29<\/span><\/a>, where it is used in the same context.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Prayer is essentially an attitude of utter dependence on God.
