{"id":3116,"date":"2014-01-03T08:40:30","date_gmt":"2014-01-03T14:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3116"},"modified":"2025-06-27T06:59:44","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T12:59:44","slug":"matthew-165-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3116","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 16:5-12"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5\u00a0Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6\u00a0Then Jesus said to them,\u00a0\u201cTake heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7\u00a0And they reasoned among themselves, saying, \u201cIt is\u00a0because we have taken no bread.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8\u00a0But Jesus, being aware of\u00a0it,\u00a0said to them,\u00a0\u201cO you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9\u00a0Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10\u00a0Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11\u00a0How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?\u2014but\u00a0to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12\u00a0Then they understood that He did not tell\u00a0them\u00a0to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>take heed (v.6) = lit. &#8220;stare at it&#8221; \u2014 discern<\/h3>\n<h3>beware (v.6) = lit. &#8220;hold yourself against it&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>leaven (v.6) \u2014 throughout Scripture, a symbol of permeating evil<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">O you of little faith (v.8) \u2014 Compare &#8220;great is thy faith (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2977\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 15:28<\/span><\/a>). The heathen woman, who only met Christ once, understood His figurative language and said: &#8220;I am a dog.&#8221; The disciples, after two years teaching, failed to understand the figurative word &#8220;leaven.&#8221; Her faith was consequently great and theirs was little. \u2014 Williams, page 715<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>remember (v.9) \u2014 On two occasions, the Lord had provided bread for large numbers of people, with much left over. The disciples had witnessed this and should have remembered that they had no reason to worry about physical bread in His presence. They were concerned with material things <em>and<\/em> relying on their own reasoning. This is why the Lord rebuked them.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The leaven of the Pharisees is explained in Luke 12:1 as hypocrisy. With this was coupled self-righteousness. The leaven of the Sadducees was false doctrine: they denied the authority of all the Old Testament except the books of Moses, and they did not believe in spiritual realities.
