{"id":2975,"date":"2014-01-01T09:00:29","date_gmt":"2014-01-01T15:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2975"},"modified":"2025-06-26T12:30:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T18:30:01","slug":"matthew-1510-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2975","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 15:10-20"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10\u00a0When He had called the multitude to\u00a0Himself,\u00a0He said to them,\u00a0\u201cHear and understand:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11\u00a0Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12\u00a0Then His disciples came and said to Him, \u201cDo You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">13\u00a0But He answered and said,\u00a0\u201cEvery plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">14\u00a0Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">15\u00a0Then Peter answered and said to Him, \u201cExplain this parable to us.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">16\u00a0So Jesus said,\u00a0\u201cAre you also still without understanding?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">17\u00a0Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">18\u00a0But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19\u00a0For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">20\u00a0These are\u00a0the things\u00a0which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>defiles (v.11) = makes profane<\/h3>\n<h3>let them alone (v.14) = take no notice<\/h3>\n<h3>is eliminated (v.17) = lit. &#8220;into the latrine&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>blasphemies (v.19) = injurious speech \u2014 criticism, libel, etc.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Christ used this confrontation as an opportunity to teach them what constituted uncleanness in the sight of God. The Pharisees considered themselves to be clean within and therefore wholly acceptable to God. According to their thinking, only that which touched them from outside could render them unclean and defiled in the sight of God. Christ repudiated this erroneous doctrine and taught that the seat of uncleanness and defilement is not external but internal (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8960\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 7:15<\/span><\/a>). This concept was so strange to even the Twelve that when they were alone with Christ, they asked him to interpret this saying.
