{"id":2954,"date":"2014-01-01T05:58:15","date_gmt":"2014-01-01T11:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2954"},"modified":"2025-06-25T06:11:50","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T12:11:50","slug":"matthew-141-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2954","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 14:1-12"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2\u00a0and said to his servants, \u201cThis is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3\u00a0For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put\u00a0him\u00a0in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip\u2019s wife.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4\u00a0Because John had said to him, \u201cIt is not lawful for you to have her.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5\u00a0And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6\u00a0But when Herod\u2019s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">7\u00a0Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8\u00a0So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, \u201cGive me John the Baptist\u2019s head here on a platter.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9\u00a0And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded\u00a0it\u00a0to be given to\u00a0her.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10\u00a0So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">11\u00a0And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought\u00a0it\u00a0to her mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">12\u00a0Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>This account also appears in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8938\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 6:14-29<\/span><\/a> and Luke 9:7-9.<\/h3>\n<h3>Herod (v.1) \u2014 Herod Antipas, ruler of Galilee and Peraea \u2014 son of Herod the Great<\/h3>\n<h3>tetrarch (v.1) = ruler of a fourth. Herod the Great&#8217;s kingdom had been divided among his sons<\/h3>\n<h3>prison (v.3) \u2014 probably in the castle of Machaerus, on the Dead Sea \u2014 John had probably been in prison for about a year.<\/h3>\n<h3>Herodias (v.3) \u2014 daughter of Aristobolus, who was Antipas&#8217; half-brother. She was married to her uncle Philip (with whom she&#8217;d had a daughter, Salome). Herodias divorced Philip and married Antipas who was already married to the daughter of Aretus, king of Arabia.<\/h3>\n<h3>daughter (v.6) \u2014 Salome, who was probably around 17 years old.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It was not long [after the events of this chapter] before the wicked ambition of Herodias led Herod to Rome to seek the title of king, given to Agrippa, the brother of Herodias. But in this quest he not only failed to obtain the title he sought but lost his dominions and was banished to Lugdumin in Gaul not far from the Spanish frontier, where he and the wicked Herodias later died in obscurity and dishonor. Salome was married to her uncle Philip, tetrarch of Trachonitis and Batanea, but after a brief time was left a widow and disappears from history.
