{"id":2844,"date":"2014-01-01T05:32:26","date_gmt":"2014-01-01T11:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2844"},"modified":"2025-06-21T06:29:53","modified_gmt":"2025-06-21T12:29:53","slug":"matthew-111-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2844","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 11:1-6"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2\u00a0And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of\u00a0his disciples<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">3\u00a0and said to Him, \u201cAre You the Coming One, or do we look for another?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">4\u00a0Jesus answered and said to them,\u00a0\u201cGo and tell John the things which you hear and see:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">5\u00a0The\u00a0blind see and\u00a0the\u00a0lame walk;\u00a0the\u00a0lepers are cleansed and\u00a0the\u00a0deaf hear;\u00a0the\u00a0dead are raised up and\u00a0the\u00a0poor have the gospel preached to them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">6\u00a0And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>This event also appears in Luke 7:18-35.<\/h3>\n<h3>John in prison (v.2) \u2014 also mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2712\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 4:12<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2954\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">14:3-12<\/span><\/a>. This was probably the fortress of Machaerus, Herod&#8217;s royal house, on the Dead Sea.<\/h3>\n<h3>he sent (v.2) \u2014 John was probably in need of reassurance, although it is also possible that he sent his disciples so they could witness the truth.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">John had declared, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2700\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 3:10<\/span><\/a>, &#8220;The axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.&#8221; He had also predicted that Christ would baptize with fire (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2700\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v.11<\/span><\/a>) and that He would &#8220;gather His wheat into the garner,&#8221; but would &#8220;burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2700\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v.12<\/span><\/a>). John, languishing in prison, did not sense any divine deliverance from a wicked world. Instead of God triumphing, it seemed that Herod, in spite of his wickedness, was still in power.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Accordingly, John needed reassurance and clarification. In the background was the Jewish interpretation of the Old Testament prophecies, which offered the puzzle of a suffering Messiah who would also be a glorious ruler (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=7517\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Peter 1:10-12<\/span><\/a>). While John should not be represented as questioning the validity of the revelation that came to him, that Jesus was indeed the Messiah who would save Israel from their sins, the question had been raised in his mind whether he should look for still another to bring the judgment of God upon a wicked world, and fulfill the predictions of the glorious reign of the Messiah. \u2014 Walvoord, pages 79-80.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">John must have wondered if Jesus were the King of Israel why did He not set up His Kingdom and deliver His fore-runner from prison? He had no doubt as to His being a prophet, for only a prophet could answer the question of verse 3. The Divine answer referred him to Isaiah 35:5-6 and 61:1. These were the particular miracles, and this the particular preaching, which should accredit His Person. His claim was not that He worked miracles, but that He worked certain predicted miracles, and preached in a certain predicted manner. \u2014 Williams, page 707.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>the Coming One (v.3) \u2014 the Messiah \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4005\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Psalm 40:7<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8305\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">118:26<\/span><\/a>. The term was used by John in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2700\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Matthew 3:11<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=8817\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mark 1:7<\/span><\/a>; Luke 3:16; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=542\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 1:27<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>blind see (v.5) \u2014 a reference to the prophecy in Isaiah 35:5-6<\/h3>\n<h3>poor have the gospel preached to them (v.5) \u2014 Isaiah 61:1-2<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This was a quotation from the great prophecy of Isaiah, and from that portion of it which He had already read in the synagogue as He entered upon this very work that was causing John perplexity (Isaiah 61:1-2).
