{"id":2623,"date":"2013-10-19T05:00:18","date_gmt":"2013-10-19T11:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2623"},"modified":"2025-05-26T08:09:55","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T14:09:55","slug":"matthew-118-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2623","title":{"rendered":"Matthew 1:18-21"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>Then Joseph her husband, being a just\u00a0man,\u00a0and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, \u201cJoseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name\u00a0Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>now (v.18) = &#8220;but&#8221; \u2014 to contrast Christ&#8217;s birth with those just listed.<\/h3>\n<h3>betrothed (v.18) \u2014 In that culture, vows were said at the time of betrothal and a legal divorce was required to end the arrangement. There was usually a period, often as long as a year, between the betrothal and the time when the bride moved in with her husband and the marriage was consummated.<\/h3>\n<h3>before they came together (v.18) \u2014 Mary was a virgin<\/h3>\n<h3>found with child (v.18) \u2014 punishable by death (Deuteronomy 22:23)<\/h3>\n<h3>with child (v.18) \u2014 her seed (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4499\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Genesis 3:15<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>of the Holy Spirit (v.18) \u2014 Luke 1:28-35<\/h3>\n<h3>put her away privately (v.19) \u2014 divorce her, in accordance with Deuteronomy 24:1<\/h3>\n<h3>Jesus (v.22) = &#8220;Jehovah saves&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>He will save (v.21) \u2014 He and no other<\/h3>\n<h3>His people (v.21) \u2014 Israel<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The name that had been revealed to Mary was now repeated to Joseph. This name was to be given &#8220;because He will save His people from their sins&#8221; (v.21). The phrase&#8221;His people&#8221; must refer to the nation Israel to whom God had given promises in Jeremiah 31:31-14 that Messiah would come to grant forgiveness of sin. \u2014 Pentecost, page 54.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>__________<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">sins (v.21) \u2014 What the people thought they wanted was a Joshua who could reveal himself to this material Jerusalem as King, break the power of Rome, and set up an earthly Kingdom.
