16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

Not ashamed \u2014 negative tense used for emphasis<\/h3>\n

Gospel \u2014 Paul is again using the general term as in Romans 1:1-2<\/a><\/span>. Here he is not referring to the mystery.<\/h3>\n

Power of God \u2014 In Romans 1:4<\/a><\/span>, the power of God referred to the resurrection. In this verse, it refers to the gospel (as the outcome of the resurrection). In Romans 1:20<\/a><\/span>, the power of God refers to creation. The word for “power” is dunamis<\/em>, the word from which we get “dynamite.”<\/h3>\n

Salvation \u2014 from<\/u> punishment, from<\/u> bondage, to<\/u> redemption<\/h3>\n

To the Jew first \u2014 the historical fact \u2014 the gospel had already gone to Israel (who rejected it as a nation although individual Jews were saved.)<\/h3>\n
