{"id":2386,"date":"2013-06-21T05:00:39","date_gmt":"2013-06-21T11:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2386"},"modified":"2022-04-17T17:20:37","modified_gmt":"2022-04-17T23:20:37","slug":"1-corinthians-111-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2386","title":{"rendered":"1 Corinthians 11:1-3"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a01 Imitate me, just as I also\u00a0imitate\u00a0Christ.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered\u00a0them\u00a0to you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman\u00a0is\u00a0man, and the head of Christ\u00a0is\u00a0God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Verse 1 refers to what Paul was writing at the end of chapter 10 and should be included there (although it also applies to chapter 11). Paul was exhorting the Corinthians to seek to benefit others more than themselves, as he did.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It should be observed that the apostle does not say: &#8220;Follow me as I follow Jesus,&#8221; but &#8220;Follow me as I follow <em>Christ<\/em>.&#8221; <em>Jesus<\/em> was the God-given <em>name<\/em> by which our Lord was known when He walked this earth with His twelve apostles. But Paul had not even been saved at that time and surely did not follow Jesus. But <em>Christ<\/em> is His <em>title<\/em> as the Anointed of God. As Peter declared in his Pentecostal address, &#8220;<em>that same Jesus<\/em>,&#8221; whom Israel had crucified, had now been exalted in heaven and made &#8220;both <em>Lord<\/em> and <em>Christ<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1294\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 2:36<\/span><\/a>). It was a Lord and Christ, exalted &#8220;far above all,&#8221; that Paul knew Him and followed Him as, by direct revelation, the Lord committed to him the glorious &#8220;mystery \u2014 hid from ages and from generations, but now &#8230; made manifest to His saints&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2059\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Colossians 1:26<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Stam, page 185.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>I praise you (v.2) \u2014 Paul begins his admonishment of what they are doing wrong by first praising them for what they were doing right.<\/h3>\n<h3>traditions (v.3) \u2014 (here) apostolic teaching about conduct in assemblies. The same word in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6182\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Thessalonians 2:15<\/span><\/a>, refers to doctrine. So, in general, it means &#8220;teachings with apostolic authority.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;ordinances&#8221; in verse 2 has nothing to do with ceremonies. The Greek <em>paradoseis<\/em> (Lit., things handed down), is everywhere else rendered traditions (whether true or false), and here refers to those truths and instructions which Paul had &#8220;handed down&#8221; to them. \u2014 Stam, page 185.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">About five years later Paul declared that Christ had blotted out the handwriting of ordinances. To be subject to ordinances now is like living in the world (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2075\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Colossians 2:14-20<\/span><\/a>), but he is here thinking of his own practical teaching which never will be superseded. \u2014 Bultema, page 91.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>But I want you to know (v.3) \u2014 new teaching<\/h3>\n<h3>the head of Christ is God (v.3) \u2014 Christ was obedient to God&#8217;s will \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=636\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 5:30<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=468\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 15:3<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1159\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Philippians 2:8<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Christ is within us to direct us in the ways of righteousness. He is the head of <em>all<\/em> believers, but He is also the head of each <em>individual<\/em> believer. Paul is also pointing out the distinction between man and woman by reason of the circumstances of their differing creation. The man is head of the woman, in the same way that Christ is the head of the man.
