1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

2\u00a0<\/sup>all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

3\u00a0<\/sup>all ate the same spiritual food,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

5\u00a0<\/sup>But with most of them God was not well pleased, for\u00a0their bodies\u00a0were scattered in the wilderness.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

moreover (v.1) \u2014 connected to chapter 9<\/h3>\n

brethren (v.1) \u2014 a loving appeal<\/h3>\n

unaware (v.1) \u2014 They weren’t unaware of the facts. He didn’t want them to be unaware of how the facts applied the them.<\/h3>\n

all (vs.1-4) \u2014 God blessed the entire nation of Israel \u2014 contrasted with “most” in v.5.<\/h3>\n

baptized (v.2) \u2014 identified with<\/h3>\n

When Paul wrote to the Corinthians about Israel’s<\/em> baptism into Moses he naturally said: “all our fathers were under the cloud,”<\/em> etc., for he<\/em> was a Jew. But when he wrote to the Corinthian believers about themselves as a congregation, he said to them: “Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led” (1 Corinthians 12:2<\/span><\/a>).<\/em> \u2014 Stam, page 165.<\/span><\/h3>\n

spiritual food (v.3) \u2014 manna from heaven (Psalms 78:25<\/span><\/a>; John 6:31-32<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n

spiritual water (v.4) \u2014 natural water with supernatural origins<\/h3>\n

drank (v.4) \u2014 1st use \u2014 past tense: 2nd use \u2014 imperfect tense, “continued to drink”<\/h3>\n

that Rock was Christ (v.4) \u2014 was (past tense) \u2014 a type of Christ, but also an indication of His presence with Israel. The Rock was stuck, possibly as a foreshadowing of His affliction (Isaiah 53:4)<\/h3>\n

most (v.5) \u2014 Only Caleb and Joshua entered Canaan (Numbers 14:30-32)<\/h3>\n

scattered (v.5) = lit. “to strew”<\/h3>\n

And so it was with the Corinthians believers \u2014 and so it is with the Bible-believing Church today. We have all<\/em> been baptized by the Spirit “into one body,” and have all<\/em> been blessed with the same “spiritual blessings;” not one of us has been excluded (1 Corinthians 12:13<\/span><\/a>; Ephesians 1:3<\/span><\/a>), but with many of us God has not been well pleased. He is pleased with us indeed as He sees us in Christ<\/em>, but many Christians are forever rejoicing in their position<\/em> while disgracefully neglecting their condition<\/em>, spiritually and even morally.
