{"id":235,"date":"2007-11-06T09:55:36","date_gmt":"2007-11-06T15:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/1002things.com\/?p=235"},"modified":"2022-03-08T09:58:35","modified_gmt":"2022-03-08T15:58:35","slug":"romans-11-%e2%80%94-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=235","title":{"rendered":"Romans 1:1 \u2014 Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; color: #0000ff; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">1 <\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">Paul<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; color: #333333; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">, <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; color: blue; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; color: #333333; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">The author of Romans identifies himself right off. His name is Paul. But that wasn&#8217;t always his name. He first appears as Saul, in <a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1434\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 7:58<\/span><\/a>, at the end of the scene where Stephen is stoned. [They] <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; color: blue; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man&#8217;s feet, whose name was Saul.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">Why was this young man standing there? Why didn\u2019t he join in the stoning? <a href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1438\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 8:1<\/span><\/a> tells us that <em><span style=\"color: blue;\">Saul was in hearty agreement with putting him to death<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">\u201cDoes this mean that he was a member of the Sanhedrin? \u2026 It was a great exception for a young man to be made a member of the Sanhedrin. Yet in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=965\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 1:14<\/span><\/a>, he later testified:\u201d I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">. \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">Stam<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">.<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">The Sanhedrin was an aristocratic council with a hereditary leadership that exercised authority under Herod and under Rome. If Saul was a member, that would explain his authority to do what we next find him doing: <em><span style=\"color: blue;\">As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1438\">Acts 8:3<\/a><\/span>).<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">After a while, Saul must have exhausted the city of Jerusalem and decided to look for followers of Christ in other places. <em><span style=\"color: blue;\">Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, and asked for letters from him to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1454\">Acts 9:1-2<\/a><\/span>)<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; color: #000000;\">And that\u2019s the first appearance of this man who would figure more prominently in the New Testament than anyone other than Jesus Christ. Young, aggressive, determined and, I imagine, pretty scary.
