19\u00a0<\/sup>For though I am free from all\u00a0men,\u00a0I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

20\u00a0<\/sup>and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those\u00a0who are\u00a0under the law, as under the law,\u00a0that I might win those\u00a0who are\u00a0under the law;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

21\u00a0<\/sup>to those\u00a0who are\u00a0without law, as without law (not being without law toward God,\u00a0but under law toward Christ), that I might win those\u00a0who are\u00a0without law;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>to the weak I became as\u00a0weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all\u00a0men,\u00a0that I might by all means save some.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

23\u00a0<\/sup>Now this I do for the gospel\u2019s sake, that I may be partaker of it with\u00a0you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

free (v.19) \u2014 from anyone who could compel him to do anything (see v.1)<\/h3>\n

under the law (v.20) \u2014 submitting voluntarily to the law even though he was free of it<\/h3>\n

without law (v.21) \u2014 not lawless, but not under the restrictions of the law<\/h3>\n

not being without law toward God (v.21) \u2014 not with the liberty to please himself<\/h3>\n

under law toward Christ (v.21) \u2014 submitting to His will<\/h3>\n

weak (v.22) \u2014 those troubled with things like eating meat offered to idols (Romans 14:1<\/span><\/a>; 15:1<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n

I have become all things (v.22) \u2014 tense indicates continuing influence of past action<\/h3>\n

Paul does whatever he can to lead people to salvation (v.22), but he knows he will only reach some.<\/h3>\n

this I do (v.23) \u2014 should be “I do all things”<\/h3>\n

for the gospel’s sake (v.23) \u2014 should be “for the gospel” \u2014 not helping the gospel \u2014 Paul is talking of his dedication<\/h3>\n

partaker of it with you (v.23) \u2014 should be “joint partaker thereof”\u2014 he’s partnering with the gospel, not with the Corinthians<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
