Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>My defense to those who examine me is this:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>Do we have no right to eat and drink?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Am I not free? (v.1) \u2014 appears first in the best manuscripts \u2014 referring to his subject in chapter 8 on Christian liberty<\/h3>\n<h3>seen Jesus (v.1) \u2014 on the road to Damascus (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1465\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 9:17<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2467\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 15:8<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>seal (v.2) \u2014 the impression made by a seal \u2014 the church in Corinth was proof of Paul&#8217;s apostleship<\/h3>\n<h3>my defense (v.3) \u2014 referring back to what he said in verses 1-2<\/h3>\n<h3>eat and drink (v.4) \u2014 referring to his right to be supported by the church \u2014 not referring to the issue of eating meat offered to idols in chapter 8<\/h3>\n<h3>a believing wife (v.5) \u2014 referring to his right to be supported again \u2014 in this case so he can support and travel with a wife (even though Paul wasn&#8217;t married)<\/h3>\n<h3>Some, at least, of the 12 apostles, including Peter, and some, or all, of the Lord&#8217;s brothers (James, Jude?) were married (v.5).<\/h3>\n<h3>Even though Paul had the right to support for himself and his family, he renounced those rights (and the right to be married) for the sake of his ministry, while at the same time still proclaiming those rights.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In this chapter, Paul <em>illustrates<\/em> the appeal made in chapter 8, that the Corinthian Christians refrain from exercising their rights and using their Christian liberty, when to do so would hinder weaker brethren spiritually. This he does\u00a0by using himself as an illustration, and gives them his own practice in the use of his apostolic rights. He points out in particular his reasons for refusing to be maintained by the church. \u2014 Greene, pages 291-292.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Paul was showing that he really did give up his rights as he claimed in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2313\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">8:13<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>Barnabas and I (v.6) \u2014 the first missionary journey \u2014 they didn&#8217;t rely upon support from the churches<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1 Am I not an apostle?
