{"id":2196,"date":"2013-01-22T05:00:59","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T11:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2196"},"modified":"2022-04-04T12:32:06","modified_gmt":"2022-04-04T18:32:06","slug":"1-corinthians-110-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2196","title":{"rendered":"1 Corinthians 1:10-13"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe\u2019s household, that there are contentions among you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Now I say this, that each of you says, \u201cI am of Paul,\u201d or \u201cI am of Apollos,\u201d or \u201cI am of Cephas,\u201d or \u201cI am of Christ.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>speak the same thing (v.10) \u2014 unity of testimony based on a common acceptance of truth.<\/h3>\n<h3>divisions (v.10) = rents, schisms \u2014 not complete separations (yet)<\/h3>\n<h3>perfectly joined together (v.10) = rendered fit \u2014 used of mending nets<\/h3>\n<h3>mind (v.10) = the facility for grasping truth<\/h3>\n<h3>judgment (v.10) = the opinion formed from truth<\/h3>\n<h3>Paul was warning against the sort of divisions that would, in time, lead to the creation of denominations.<\/h3>\n<h3>those of Chloe&#8217;s household (v.11) \u2014 That Paul readily identifies his source indicates that they weren&#8217;t tattling but were seriously concerned.<\/h3>\n<h3>say (v.12) = mean \u2014 &#8220;This is what I mean &#8230; &#8220;<\/h3>\n<h3>each one of you (v.12) \u2014 They were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all<\/span> taking sides. (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2454\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 14:26<\/span><\/a>).<\/h3>\n<h3>Cephas (v.12) \u2014 Peter&#8217;s Aramaic name. Paul always uses this name except in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=987\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 2:7-8<\/span><\/a>. Use of the Aramaic indicates a Jewish audience.<\/h3>\n<h3>Is Christ divided? (v.13) \u2014 Is Christ distributed to a particular person or party?<\/h3>\n<h3>was Paul crucified (v.13) \u2014 pointing out his own insignificance<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">True the Lord used Paul to plant the seed of the Corinthians church \u2014 but He used Apollos in watering. Apollos \u2014 born at Alexandria, an <em>&#8220;eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1853\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 18:24<\/span><\/a>)<\/em> \u2014 would have appealed strongly to the Corinthians and could easily have caused some of them to form a sect (or group) around him \u2014 which, of course, would be contrary to the Holy Spirit and against the teaching of the Apostle Paul.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=5124\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 10:10<\/span><\/a> we know that there were certain factions in the church who were bitterly antagonistic toward Paul: <em>&#8220;For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>&#8220;&#8230; And I (am) of Cephas &#8230;&#8221;<\/em> In speaking of the Apostle Peter, with the exception of <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=987\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 2:7-8<\/span><\/a>, Paul always used the name Cephas. Cephas was an Aramaic name; Peter was a Greek name.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This sect, in a Greek city, using the name of Cephas, seems to suggest that the leading men in this little group were Jews. No doubt they stressed the fact that Cephas was pre-eminent among the twelve, and that he was the leader and spokesman. Perhaps his conduct at Antioch had given them the idea that Cephas, not Paul, should be the leader in the church. Thus, although there is no evidence that Cephas ever visited Corinth, this group had chosen to cast their lot with him.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>&#8220;&#8230; And I(am) of Christ &#8230;&#8221;<\/em> It may have been that the leaders in this group thought they were superior to those in the church who claimed to be followers of Paul, Apollos and Cephas. \u2014 Greene, pages 51-52.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">__________<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Strangely, this passage is often used against those who teach that saved Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians are <em>&#8220;one body in Christ&#8221;<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=429\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 12:5<\/span><\/a>). It is used against them because they insist upon the great doctrine of the &#8220;<em>one body<\/em>&#8221; and its &#8220;<em>one baptism<\/em>&#8221; committed by revelation to the Apostle Paul. They, the very ones so fragmented by division, charge their opponents with making too much of Paul, claiming that the twelve apostles and Paul all proclaimed the same message, and that to teach otherwise is to foster party spirit.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">But such an interpretation of 1 Corinthians 1:11-13 would be contrary to the context in this same letter from Paul, for in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2252\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4:16<\/span><\/a> he earnestly &#8220;<em>beseeches<\/em>&#8221; them <em>&#8220;Be ye followers of me.&#8221;<\/em> Was he contradicting himself, or are some of our spiritual leaders confused as to his meaning?<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Those who seek to evade the issue of 1 Corinthians 1:11-13, and to escape Paul&#8217;s withering rebuke of their sectarian divisions should ask themselves why Paul alone, beside our Lord on earth, says <em>&#8220;Follow me&#8221;<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2252\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 4:16<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2386\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">11:1<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1202\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Philippians 3:17<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4148\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 1:6<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6209\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Thessalonians 3:7-9<\/span><\/a>; etc.). They should ask themselves why Paul alone speaks of<em> &#8220;my gospel,&#8221; &#8220;our gospel,&#8221; &#8220;that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles,&#8221; &#8220;the gospel which was preached of me&#8221;<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=269\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 2:16<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=504\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">16:25<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2460\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 15:1<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4951\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Corinthians 4:3<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=980\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 2:2<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4148\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 1:5<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6182\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Thessalonians 2:14<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3536\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Timothy 2:8<\/span><\/a>; etc.). They should ask themselves why, at Jerusalem, he discussed his gospel &#8220;<em>privately<\/em>&#8221; with &#8220;those who were of reputation&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=980\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 2:2<\/span><\/a>). They should ask themselves what he meant when he said: <em>&#8220;&#8230; I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles; I magnify my office&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=416\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 11:13<\/span><\/a>).<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">They should ask themselves what the apostle meant when he wrote to the Gentile believers at Ephesus about: &#8220;&#8230;<em> the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward; how that by revelation He made known unto me the mystery<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3706\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 3:1-3<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Finally, they should ask themselves whether a change in dispensation did not occur when the other apostles and elders at Jerusalem shook hands with Paul and Barnabas in a solemn agreement, publicly recognizing Paul as now God&#8217;s appointed apostle to the Gentiles, and binding themselves henceforth to confine their own ministry to Israel (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=987\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 2:9<\/span><\/a>).
