{"id":2099,"date":"2012-12-26T05:00:08","date_gmt":"2012-12-26T11:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2099"},"modified":"2023-02-20T09:43:22","modified_gmt":"2023-02-20T15:43:22","slug":"colossians-318-22-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2099","title":{"rendered":"Colossians 3:18-22 \u2014 Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Three things may be said about the wife&#8217;s submission to her husband. First, the context indicates that the wife&#8217;s attitude is prompted by and warranted by the husband&#8217;s unselfish love.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Second, the form of the verb (middle voice) shows that the submission is to be voluntary. That is to say, the wife&#8217;s submission is not something forced upon her by a demanding husband; it is the deference that a loving wife, conscious that home (just as any other institution) must have a head, gladly shows to a worthy husband.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Third, such submission is said to be &#8220;fitting in the Lord.&#8221; The verb has in it the thought of what is becoming and proper. The phrase &#8220;in the Lord,&#8221; to be construed with &#8220;is fitting,&#8221; indicates that wifely submission is proper not only in the natural order (as pagans would teach) but also in the Christian order. \u2014 Vaughan, page 105.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>love (v.19) = <em>agape<\/em> \u2014 seeking her best interest in all circumstances<\/h3>\n<h3>bitter (v.19) \u2014 anger, severity<\/h3>\n<h3>children (v.20) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3789\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 6:1-3<\/span><\/a> \u2014 in contrast with <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=258\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 1:30<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3554\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Timothy 3:2<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>obey (v.20) \u2014 tense indicates ongoing, habitual action<\/h3>\n<h3>unto the Lord (v.20) \u2014 should be &#8220;in the Lord&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>Verse 21 is stating that parents should not make obedience a difficulty \u2014 not be fault-finding or nagging.<\/h3>\n<h3>discouraged (v.21) = lost heart, become sullen, moody<\/h3>\n<h3>servants (v.22) = slaves \u2014 In the real sense, as those who are property, without rights.
