{"id":2096,"date":"2012-12-23T05:00:25","date_gmt":"2012-12-23T11:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2096"},"modified":"2023-02-20T09:37:45","modified_gmt":"2023-02-20T15:37:45","slug":"colossians-315-17-the-peace-of-christ-and-the-word-of-christ","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2096","title":{"rendered":"Colossians 3:15-17 \u2014 The Peace of Christ and the Word of Christ"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>peace (v.15) \u2014 within the believer AND among all believers.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Whenever anything takes place which would create anxiety or perplexity, making it difficult to know how to act, the peace of Christ is to settle the matter, controlling and directing the heart. \u2014 Vine, page 365<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>God (v.15) \u2014 should be &#8220;Christ&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>rule (v.15) = act as an umpire, arbitrate, decide<\/h3>\n<h3>word of Christ (v.16) \u2014 His revealed will<\/h3>\n<h3>dwell (v.16) = to live in as a home<\/h3>\n<h3>richly (v.16) \u2014 in quantity and degree \u2014 fully and constantly<\/h3>\n<h3>in all wisdom (v.16) \u2014 goes with &#8220;teaching and admonishing&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>admonishing (v.16) = warning, exhorting, encouraging, reproving<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">While the leading idea of <em>psalmos<\/em> (psalms) is a musical accompaniment and that of <em>humnos<\/em> (hymns), praise to God, <em>oide<\/em> (spiritual songs) is the general word for a song, whether accompanied or unaccompanied, whether of praise or on any other subject. Thus it was quite possible for the same song to be at once a psalm, hymn, and a spiritual song. In the text, the reference to psalms, we may suppose, is specially, though not exclusively (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2454\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 14:26<\/span><\/a>), to the Psalms of David, which would early form part of the worship of the Christian brotherhood. On the other hand, hymns would more appropriately designate those hymns of praise which were composed by the Christians themselves on distinctly Christian themes, being either set forms of words or spontaneous effusions of the moment.
