{"id":2089,"date":"2012-12-14T05:00:48","date_gmt":"2012-12-14T11:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2089"},"modified":"2023-02-15T07:13:57","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T13:13:57","slug":"colossians-35-8-%e2%80%94-therefore-put-to-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2089","title":{"rendered":"Colossians 3:5-8 \u2014 Therefore, put to death"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>therefore (v.5) \u2014 because your life is hidden in Christ and you will appear with Him in glory (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2087\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">vs. 3-4<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>put to death (v.5) \u2014 tense indicates an act with a definite result \u2014 put to death with a decisive act<\/h3>\n<h3>members (v.5) = limbs \u2014 used here in the sense of instruments by which we sin<\/h3>\n<h3>fornication (v.5) = illicit sexual intercourse \u2014 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2276\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 6:18<\/span><\/a>).<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>uncleanness (v.5) = impurity, in thought, word, and act<\/h3>\n<h3>passion (v.5) \u2014 ungovernable desire<\/h3>\n<h3>covetousness (v.5)\u00a0= a desire to have more, in a bad sense \u2014 here probably used of sexual coveting<\/h3>\n<h3>The Colossians had been saved out of paganism which indulged in sexual immorality, as did some branches of the Gnostics.<\/h3>\n<h3>sons of disobedience (v.6) \u2014 not in the best texts, but found in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3769\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 5:6<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3>disobedience (v.6) = obstinacy, being unpersuadable<\/h3>\n<h3>you (v.7) \u2014 emphatic<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Notice the beauty of this verse, &#8220;the wrath of God&#8221; does not come upon you, but upon <em>them<\/em>, as he says in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3689\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ephesians 2:3<\/span><\/a>: &#8220;[ye] <em>were<\/em> the children of wrath,&#8221; but God has done something with you. He has given you life in Christ, you&#8217;ve been crucified with Christ, the old man is dead and you are &#8220;raised to walk in newness of life.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Now that does not mean that the believer cannot fall into sin; or that the believer cannot fail, for he often fails. For this reason the apostle says that it is our responsibility as believers to constantly be &#8220;putting to death&#8221; that which is earthly in us, that old nature that would lead us back into sin again. And he says we should do it because of &#8220;these things [for which] the wrath of God cometh upon the children of disobedience.&#8221; The unsaved, the lost, will be punished for those things.
